  • White 1995 SEAT Ibiza Mk2 GTi Maintenance and Minor Restoration Thread

    Hey Guys,
Just a small thread I'm hoping to use to cover the maintenance and restoration on parts of my awesome little Ibiza GTi. If any of you were at the Nationals Super Sprint this year, you would have seen it being driven around the track by my older brother Aydan. (gldgti)
Bought the car with 161,000kms on the clock, from a bloke down in Inner West Sydney. Everything on it is standard, apart from the 14" BBS rims I've fitted and a small air box mod we did the night before the supersprint to make it a little louder. (so basically standard)

    So far I've gotten to:
(*) Replace a/c pump, and get the air con re-gassed and working beautifully.
(*) Fitted new performance spark plugs.
(*) Replaced a bushing inside the transfer box, which prior to being replaced meant the linkage rod, and therefore gear stick wobbled all over the place, and made it more difficult than it should be to get into 1st and 5th.
    (*) New Air Filter.
(*) Swapped in some really comfy VR6 front seats, with matching upholstery and head rests in the back. (Original GTi seats weren't my cup of tea).

    Still to come:
(*) Front shocks need replacing - Ordered some stock shock absorbers for it from Tooleys Imports - so should be here very soon.
(*) Fix up a few scuffs and nics around the corners of the car which have been there since bought.
(*) Carry out some rust prevention around the doors and windscreen.
(*) Hopefully improve the brakes for next years super sprint.
(*) Fix the central locking - At the moment when you lock it, the central locking pump turns on but nothing happens... Meaning it's extra effort to open the fuel cap and boot.

No doubt there will be other things to pop up throughout the process, but there you have it. My new, first (owned) car. And I'm loving it! Regularly get 6-7L/100kms driving all over the place. Running smooth. Currently sitting at 171,000kms.

        Thanks guys!

Hopefully I've got two brand new front shocks arriving with the postman today, so I can fit those and also just do a little tweaking with the gear linkage. Then it's off for a wheel alignment!

Can't wait to have a smooth normal ride again.

I realised that I haven't really kept this this thread up to date, however I will have pics and news coming soon!

          Things that I've done:
          - replaced Dissy Cap
          - performance chipped ecu
          - resprayed the rear of the car
          - working on some brake ventilation for supersprint day!

Recently the car has been through the wars after I hit a cow, although we got off lucky and she'll be fixed within the week!

          Pics to come soon.

I've just bought a Ibiza 2.0 16v as a spares car if you need any panels.

            Cheers

Brooseph brought his seat to my house looking a bit worse for wear:

Big thanks to Matt at Camden GTI for helping us out with some panels and bits. A champion as always

Home by about 3 on Sat arvo, got started - had to respray the new wing, bonnet and existing front lower panel under the radiator.
By sunday lunch she was looking pretty sweet again:

I'm planning to do the Cupra/VR6 brake upgrade in the near future... Those alloys are looking nice for the 280mm disks...

You hit a cow and that's the only damage you did? You are so lucky!

I'm not sure what I'm doing with the 16's on the Cupra. If they look good on my MK1 Golf I'll use them but if not I'll put them up for sale.

                    Cheers

I got off RIDICULOUSLY lucky, although truth be told I swerved quite a lot and I was only going very slow - But it still managed to kill the thing.

                      UPDATE TO POWER QUEST!

Ordered a new Cam from TechTonics in the US!

                      Once this is done... brakes...

What specs cam? You know you can go slightly wilder in specs if you are choosing a cam that suits a 1.8 engine because you've got an extra 200cc. May not sound much but it does make a difference.

                        Cheers

The cam I got is a 272" schlick? made unit. Should be a nice upgrade for the OBD1 engine.

Yeah man I'm really looking forward to it. I'm hoping to get the cam/tune done as well as the Cupra/VR6 brake upgrade done before the Nats in May. Should make the car a nice little road worthy pocket rocket!
