Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Probably nothing serious. Could be exhaust header leak or perhaps a tired hydraulic lifter.

Hmmm, it's only happened as of last night and i drove around 100k's home and to school today and it is fine. No performance loss or anything so far but it's really loud and it doesn't go away at all when it warms up.

Probably going to get a lift to school tomorrow....

How does one go about checking the oil pump? I think that's my first port of call, checking if the engine is actually getting oil? I don't know.

It's only happened last night as the weather got colder and it's been cold/rainy here all day... Maybe it's just that i need thicker oil when it's colder weather? (I read that on another forum) so it may be a silly idea.

if it doesnt go away when it warms up, its probably a header leak.

If you had low oil pressure you would be getting low oil pressure warning light (assuming its working?). i.e. when you turn on the ignition without starting it, the oil warning lamp should come on. when you start the car it will go out if there is oil pressure.

if its an exhaust header leak you should be able to find it just by looking around in the engine bay while its running, and listening carefully.

Yeah I've had that on before when I used the wrong filter by what Ryco said being wrong.. (oil went everywhere) but I obviously isntantly stopped the car.

I recently got the oil sensor replaced too, the one that sits right above the sump plug as it had cracked and was leaking oil.

Gonna sound dumb, but what's the exhaust header? I've got limited experience with cars only being able to basic things. :p

Got a car minded friend (guy who sells parts) coming over to have a look soon with me..

Hmm, yeah I saw that pretty recently too!

Right now I'm trying to stop the sound it's been making! I've been sick and still kind of am but on the weekend I'll be dropping the oil for a start to inspect for metal in it... If there's none I'm going to put slightly thicker oil in and see what happens from there.

                Cheers for that post.

Either way I'm either going to be selling it for parts (wrecking) it or swapping/selling it for something more reliable (EF/AU Falcon)

Alright so update I had low oil somehow....

Don't know how that even happened as I have no oil leaks and I drobe 400k's beforehand.. Anyway got thicker oil in there now and it's all good.

I am still yet to solve the original problem however, attempted to check the throttle position sensor to be unable to figure out where it was!? :s

I'm honestly at a standstill, I really want to get this problem sorted but I think I'm back to the drawing board..

I've been suggested to try the fuel pressure regulator by someone, the throttle position sensor does need to be tested and I'll get around to that soon with someone with more experience with me and the injectors need to be tested too.

As well as testing vaccum leaks, but that's the last thing I want to do and I am doubtful that it's a vaccum leak as vaccum leaks generally have no warning lamp.

Alright so an update, I finally got this sorted out!

Turns out it was a intake manifold leak, the top seal had been over-torqued and I went to replace the gasket and had the wrong one! Anyway I ended up getting an intake manifold from another 2.6 (there are two revisions so be careful, as well as a 2.8 being different again!). I won't go into detail about those though, basically 1991-1993 is type A, and 1994 onwards should be type B.

Anyway so yeah, that as well as my MAP sensor looked to be pretty bad, even after a cleanup with around 10x cotton buds and metho. Just going to get a SCA one and see if that improves it further.

I still do however get the warning lamp upon startup, do also note that I did break a vaccum hose (it was brittle/frayed anyway) and replaced that too. The one that goes from the left side of the throttle body to some weird plastic hose thing up top near where the heater hoses would go in.

Just a brief question, how should I bypass my heater core? I've had the hoses cut since I had the car but the "fix" that someone else has done happens to leak now..

Injectors came up fine also, all around the 14.5k ohm mark, I also found out that these will fit.

Long wait! But this didn't fix it, it turned out to mostly be a massive waste of time! Although my old intake manifold wasn't in the best of condition anyway.

Right now I've checked pretty much everything, my local(ish) wrecker's mate had a 2.6 (ABC) Cabriolet with the same/similar issue and he said that he replaced the ECU and the engine speed sensor and it fixed it (and showed me).. So logically it's one or the other, the sensor being cheaper and easier to find (I got mine for $10) I wanted to try first.

New issue is after thinking I know how to do this and being told it was fairly easy... To find that it's not and I have no clue whatsoever..

Anybody able to shed any light on the matter at all..? I do really want to sort this out :s

Anyway, got that injector set! Going to pull out after this weekend and give it a go. I have compared the kit to an injector when I was at the wreckers and it appeared to be fine.
