Be warned that the k&n may stuff up the maf sensor due to it being oil based.

I don't know about MBCs, these cars tend to run lean and cause damage when you try that. Maybe up 1-2psi, but probably not worth it.

APR or GIAC are the main 2 choices as far as chips go, around $1400 for GIAC and a little more for APR. It's definitly the best bang for buck. Seb in Girraween for GIAC and derek in Mona Vale for APR are the closest two to you I think.

A boost controller isn't the way to go. The cost of getting it wrong would be far more than having the ECU done properly.

will a manual boost controller increase the fuelling??

is the a4 a quattro, because if it is, it already has a larger turbo..? (someone correct me?)

a chip/front mount IC/exhaust system/lighter wheels will make you go faster.. just depends on much monies you want to part with..

It was a 7k car remember... I'd just chip it and put a nice BOV and leave it at that

No, a MBC just reduces the air going to the wastegate, so the wastegate may only see 10PSI while the intake manifold has 15PSI. It doesn't do anything to the amout of fuel. Some cars ECUs will increase the amount of fuel accordingly, but not audis and VWs.

I don't think he has a quattro, but all B5 1.8T come with the normal K03, the GP quattro versions (99-01) did have a different tune with 20KW more, but still the same hardware.

Utter nonsense! I'm sick of hearing this b/s bandied around as though it's fact when it is not. It will only 'stuff up' your MAF if you OVER-OIL it when cleaning it. The K&N product is excellent and their instructions are both easy to follow and extremely clear on how much you should or should NOT oil your filter.

                        thanks all!! some helpful feedback..
Im not planning on throwing a silly amount of money on it (already done that with the skyline) im just looking for a few minor upgrades to make it a bit punchier.
The chip sound like the logical thing to do as the next step.
The k&n didnt make a big difference in anything other than a bit more induction noise which is all good. Im just consernes that it might however effect the ecu and cause it to run richer or leaner.

How many stories have you heard of these ill effects though? ALOT and not always here say. The problems are out there and it can be costly, so a friendly warning may be called for.
Possibly I should have said; if used incorrectly, it may cause MAF trouble.
I actually have a K&N panel filter and haven't had any trouble as yet (only been there for 15K - cleaned and re-oiled once), but it can happen easily.

So ... hearsay is evidence, is it? K&N give an engine LIFETIME GUARANTEE ... the buyer is protected and they wouldn't do that if they were not confident in their product.

I've used one (with great results) for over 2 years and I have yet to see ANY validated proof that this claim is warranted.

+1 for DaveMack, as I've used oiled filters on my last three cars (that's almost 10 years) including a complete K&N 57i Series Induction Kit on the Astra and a panel in the AMG and have never once had anything even remotely resembling a problem with the MAF. I have never had one fail. Ever.

These filters have to be oiled with the lightest of films to work properly. The only thing that will kill a MAF is the moron who's over-oiled it.
