Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Dear All

Am seriously considering pulling the pin on one of these

    2015 Volkswagen Jetta 118TSI Trendline 1B Manual MY16

But I have nagging concerns about the 1.4 twin turbo motor and its longevity and reliability ...... am I paranoid or is there anything else I should be concerned about regarding this car ?

    Considered opinions appreciated

I lashed out on a Jetta mid year...

Main reason, we had one as a hire car and as a V8 owner I liked the wide torque band of the twin charged motor. So I did my research. I don't like turbocharging (long story) but think a turbo cutting in at higher revs than a linked supercharger overcomes my dislike for turbo.

It appears to me there was a bit of trouble with the early versions. Forums were full of tales of woe. But around the beginning of 2013 the tales of woe stopped being "I had..." and started to be more of the "I know someone...". From what I can tell they changed the pistons from cast to forged, changed the knock sensors, modified the injectors etc. I've been looking at a few mods (I really miss 6 litres of creamy V and have been told the main thing to watch for is rattles when the motor starts, mainly caused by timing chains.

People are claiming the motor has been scrapped because of reliability, but I am more of the belief it is being scrapped because of the cost. After all, a motor with a supercharger and turbocharger has got to be more expensive than a motor with a turbocharger.

If you like it, go for it. Consider the extended warranty to assay your fears.

Look in the Polo section - heaps of problems with that engine - personally, while I love the concept, I would not touch that engine

Does not matter why VW discontinued the 1.4 twin charge engine, it means no more development on that platform, end of life.

Oh, and make sure you run the twincharged on the best fuel you can access.
