  • Revealed: the cheapest car to own and run - Jetta 118TSi Best Medium Car

Good news for 118TSi owners. I always thought it was a fantastic car and offers excellent value. I suspect with low depreciation this also helped contribute to this.

Revealed: the cheapest car to own and run

In the medium car segment, the $26,490 Volkswagen Jetta 118TSI manual was found to offer the best ownership cost prospects, with a calculated weekly cost of $170.78.

    Cheers

Until you factor in a replacement engine out of warranty.

DSG was $2 per week cheaper in QLD

Don't depend on it. A friends 2009 Jetta 118 DSG purchased new 4 years ago for $35,000, did 130,000km and in immaculate condition only fetched $6700 at the auctions the other day. That is massive depreciation. No-one wants the 118 engine and 7 speed DSG combination in the used market.

and dont forget the DSG box and clutches and mechatronics. And the fact that the engines use more oil than they do fuel.

Interesting point of view based on "facts" provided by the company I suspect - it could be half the price and I would no longer care.

Now lets add the inconvenience factor on waiting for parts, or a car that can't be used because of some dodgy quality issue.

Here is the list of things I have had to contend with

            New Engine (14,000km)
            Clutch Pack replacement (30,000km)
            DSG failure (54,000km)
            Clutch Pack issue (62,000km)
            New Gearbox (67,000km)
            Turbo Failure (70,000km)

Each time I have lost use of my car for extended periods - fortunately the dealer came to the party after some pressure

I have had it with VW and their 118TSI & Speed DSG

I want action and resolution of this - I now believe that with the problems of the combination - the value of this car is ridiculously low and I doubt I will recoup the losses EVER on this car

Its a shame as the Jetta is a nice car,but I think you chose the worst possible VW engine/gearbox combination.

Is the manual gearbox okay with this engine, Did it still suffer the same issues?

I had a manual 118tsi for 3 years, and my engine / gearbox never had an issue. Oil levels were never a trouble, drivetrain was flawless. This is just one owners experience. My car would have been 3yrs in October and had just surpassed 55,000kms. The only reason I no longer have it, is that I was in an accident and now the car is gone.
