Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Looking to Buy VW T3 Campervan... Advice Requested

    Hi All,

I'm new to this forum, and I'm currently looking to buy a later model VW T3 campervan, which I can put on club plates here in Victoria. I particularly like the look of the Trakka camper conversions on the T3.

I am after a project to keep me busy, so I'm definitely not afraid of a bit of rust, bodywork, re-painting or mechanical repairs... all of which I can do myself. However, I am concerned about the cost of getting the canvas replaced on a Trakka pop top. I've heard that it can be a very expensive exercise, perhaps even to the point that a Trakka campervan which needs the canvas replacing might not be a viable purchase.

For example, I understand that replacing the canvas on an older VW T2 style pop top would be around $800, which is fine. However, I've heard that replacing the canvas on a Trakka pop top (ie the one with the front strut and internal gas lifters) could run to several thousand dollars, which is definitely not fine.

Has anyone had the canvas replaced on a Trakka pop top, and, if so, what sort of price would I really be looking at to have the job done? Are there any specialists in Melbourne I should look up?

In short, I don't want to buy a VW T3 and then find that I have to spend half the purchase price again to have the pop top canvas replaced. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Nick
