VIC Newbie buying used Mk5 with lots of K's...

I'm looking at buying a used '05 Golf Mk5 with over 200,000 K's on it as a private sale.

With this many K's - I guess its more about how the car has been looked after and the service log will be very important.


There are a few things I'm hoping you guys can help me work out:

1. I am assuming that it will still have give me 150-200,000 more if it has been maintained properly. Is this reasonable?
2. What things to look for in the service log, when checking out a vehicle with this many K's?
3. A good mechanic in Inner or East Melbourne familiar with VW's and can do an pre-purchase inspection?
4. Any other tips would be appreciated to


I've already researched here and other forums and found stuff on 1 & 2.
#1 - if it's been serviced, I shouldn't have too many issues. I'm looking at manual so the DSG shouldn't be an issue.
# 2 - the big one seems to me to ensure its had at least two timing belts done. Anything else big?

So I guess I jumped the gun a little. This is the newbie's get to know me section so I'll write a little more about me here and then cross post my actual questions to the Mk5 forums.

Mods - please let me know if this is not ok.

TLDR: Currently in the market to buy my first VW.

My last fun car was V8 mustang that I owned in the USA 2011 to 2013 - they were a lot of car for the $$$ at about $US 20k over there. They were a ridiculous 100k $AUS. Almost imported it back but its a massive hassle and to do the LH conversion and in the end didn't do it.

I was only supposed to be back here for a couple of months and needed just a little something to get around. Needed to buy something quick that wouldn't be a hassle - my sisters friend had a 2001 hyundai accent 1.6l for $3k and I knew it was well looked after. Cheap reliable economical transport - done. It did its job well. But things changed and I have ended up staying in Australia.


The hyundai accent was a good, reliable little car and did what its supposed to do well. But going from a 5 litre V8 mustang to a 1.5L hyundai accent is as depressing as it sounds.
I've missed the joy of really driving... and the little things, like being able to actually overtake a car. That isn't an option in the accent, you just have to go behind..

I had a crash when a lady pulled out in front of me a few days ago - she and I are thankfully both ok. My cheap little accent though - has driven its last. So now I'm in the market for a new car.
Unfortunately I've just been diagnosed with cancer and I'm not able to work -for a while - so I can't spend what I'd like to on a car just now. So I figure I'm going to try to get an older good quality diesel - something with a few more K's on it and hold that until I'm right to work again. But I like driving something that has some go and is a pleasure to drive. I've heard good things about the drive experience of the mk5 golf and hope to soon join your ranks!
