Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD MkIV Golf GTI 1GTI4

    Hi All,
I started my VW experience in early January of this year. For quite some time I looked into various cars and ended up test-driving a 2001 MkIV Golf GTI. A few of my friends had recently bought other forced-induction cars (EVO 8, Mazda MPS) but when I drove the Golf I loved it from the get go. So after a few negotiations I bought it within about a week of initially viewing it.

The gentleman I bought it from definitely loved it. It was always garaged, well maintained, with some tasteful modifications done to it. These included window tint, aftermarket 18" XXR wheels, Turbosmart boost tee and boost gauge, GReddy turbo timer, "HKS" SSQV BOV and a sound system that he claimed "was previously a competition winner". Very tidy inside and out.

Since buying it I haven't done a whole lot to it but I have made a few modifications that include:

    Engine:
    • Short ram intake with custom-made piping and engine bay mount (to please the authorities)
    • Custom 2.5" cat-back exhaust including resonator delete (to not please the authorities :\)
    • Upped the boost (13psi)

    Suspension, Brakes & Tyres:
    • Replaced the front tyres with Bridgestone Potenza RE050A's - 225/40/R18

    Exterior:
    • The fantastic "1GTI4" plates
    • LED Licence plate lights
    • Replaced parker bulbs with blue coloured bulbs for blue shine in the lamps
    • GTI front grille badge
    • GTI valve stem caps
    • Painted brake calipers from stock black to custom yellow
    • Stubby Antenna
    • Installed a few stickers for an extra couple of kW's...

    Interior:
    • Broadway rear-view mirror
    • Smelly tree scent throughout
    • Genuine Recaro seatbelt covers all-round

Well that's about it folks, I joined the forum basically to share idea's, learn a few things and document some of the things I have in store for the car. In the future I'd really like to make it show-spec and start by replacing the slightly-grazed rear bar with an R32 style single-exhaust bar, some sort of ECU tune, FMIC etc. This will be all in good time however.

Anyway, I live on the Gold Coast/Brisbane so if you see me around give me a wave.

    See you in the forums!
    Adam

    Welcome to the forum

Just curious after you upped the boost have you logged it to see if it's leaning out or not?

You might want to before you find out the hard way.

      Thanks Gavin.

Not as yet but am looking into tunes at the moment and then in that case I'll do away with the man boost controller. I was looking into GIAC over APR honestly but I'm reading and looking around these forums for opinions on both... or others.

            Hey Carlos,
"Car looks nice" Says you! Yours look mint Looked at a set of DTeks a while ago through another forum but couldn't find any with suitable offset. Your fitment looks perfect however so I'll definitely be keeping my eyes and ears open.

I'm moving up to Brisbane in August/September so I'm sure I'll see you around. Like I said to Gavin as well, once I get all sorted up there with a job etc, I'll definitely be looking into a tune/hardware upgrades.

            Looking forward to it!
