Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • ACT Hello

    Hi all,

My handle is Ozrcboy. For my sins I have a beautiful family including my wife and three children and two water cooled diesel VWs. Each passing year my family grows and delights me a little more. Each passing year my aging VWs make me feel a little more nervous about our motoring future.

We live about 70km from Canberra where I work. I've enjoyed the efficiency of running our diesels back and forth, now as the passat passes 150,000km I'm looking forward less to the tail end of its life.

My handle comes from my passion for remote control aviation, although with my family there is less and less time for that these days.

Hoping I might find some advice and VW expertise here before I confront dealerships/workshops with problems.

    Regards,
    Oz.

      Braidwood?

      God's country.

A mate of mine is a local mechanic who know's VW's well and don't worry about going over the 150k mark, my MK2 Golf has done over 330k and I still use it as my daily each day for work and to take the kids to school in Canberra.

      Cheers

      Paul

Local mate - Stephan per chance? What's the odds eh - 1000 odd people in Braidwood. For all the bad press would have to say our dubs have been pretty much faultless (not withstanding potential coolant issue with the passat). My wife's Golf had one tiny little manufacturing defect (a join in the exhaust not quite right - picked up by carbon build up in service years later), has had the injector recall, but has worked perfectly. BTW - was my Golf - not sure how I ended up with the station wagon. As for the passat - I have some gripes about the ergonomics (you can't get the seat low enough) but the fuel usage, the drivability - so good on the highway.

LOL, yes, it's Steph. I'm taking my wife's Passat to his place tonight to take the gearbox out. His garage is much warmer than my backyard and it's handy having him looking over my shoulder while I do the work.
