Hi all,
Have owned 2007 VW Passat 125TDi from new. 130k on the clock
Regularly serviced ad many kms of trouble free motoring until recently...
Firstly my aircon failed - learnt a lot about VW service centres through that experience!
(I've had the orange particulate filter warning light on and off for 3 years and no VW service centre (NSW or WA) has told me I had a problem)
Then a couple of weeks ago the power steering went - Symptoms = red steering wheel warning lamp on dash accompanied with a loud continuous beep. Plus you need serious muscles to turn the wheel.
Went to my local euro car mechanics who diagnosed a faulty power steering motor, which miraculously fixed itself when the computer was reset. In the meantime they stated that they would not be able to repair the problem should it re-occur, and that I'd have to go to a VW service centre. They'd checked on the cost (from a VW service centre, having explained the problem) and were assured that it would be around a $1500 job.
Well, you guessed it, the problem returned (today) so I dutifully had the car towed the the VWSC (the same as above who'd provided the repair estimate). Who subsequently phoned me up and quoted $2865 to replace the Steering Rack!. When questioned about just replacing the faulty motor they calmly told me that was not possible.
So do I go ahead or drive the car into the nearest deserted mine shaft..
