NSW New to VW's

Hi all

Ive owned 2 VW Jetta FSI's since being here in Australia (originally from the UK) and am now looking to get myself an old school MK1 or MK2 Golf GTI to restore and have some fun in.

Always loved the MK1 & 2 Golfs and now that im at the perfect time in life to finally buy myself one as a toy for myself and also appreciate it ive decided to jump in head 1st.

Hope to talk to all you MK1 & 2 fans alot over the course of this journey.

Im after buying a MK2 Golf GTI or a MK1 or 2 Convertible preferably but would also be keen on a MK1 GTI so if anyone knows any for sale then im keen to have a look.

Welcome to the forum, nice to see you've got great taste.

Check the For Sale section of the forum, together with Gumtree for the old Golfs. There's a lot of crap out there but occasionally something special comes on the market. There's a wrecker near me who has 50 MK1's so parts aren't too much of a problem and he's got a couple of 2 door MK1's that are worth restoring. It just depends on how much work you want to do.

Thanks for the advice, I've been looking at Gumtree, eBay and a few other sites and yes there definitely is a lot of crap out there hoping to find a hidden gem somewhere.

Where is the wreckers that has the mk1's, any chance you have or could get any photos of the 2 you reckon are worth restoring.

With the amount of work I'm really not bothered if it's a lot of work or a little work to be honest, the big plan is to get one do it up over a few years then drive it around until my son is old enough to take it off my hands, I think he will appreciate it if he sees the work that goes into it and also helps along the way with bits and pieces.

Then I'll get another one, or 2 maybe.

Always loved the old golfs they are just a timeless car.

Theres a black mk2 on the classifieds I'm keen on but the guys not responded. 😔

I saw your post for the MK2, they are much better cars than the MK1 but there's something special about the MK1's that hook you once you've had one. They are more "rough" but so much fun to drive. I've never had anyone wave and talk to me at shops or trafficlights in the MK2 but it happens a lot in the MK1.

I'll try to get photos next time I'm out at the wreckers. Nick wants $1500 each and they have very little rust. They are both complete but have been sitting out in the open for years so really need a full teardown and rebuild. Give him a call on 0412 345 126. He lives on 400 acres just outside Bungendore.

yeah I love both mk1 & 2, I can understand that the mk1 would draw more attention and also know they are more raw and fun to drive thanks for the advice.

I'll give nick a call on Monday, are the 2 he has for sale GTI's or standard mk1's, $1500 seems a pretty fair price if they are solid and not much rust to sort.

I've found a mk1 1982 golf karmann convertible the owner wants rid and wanted $1000 managed to get him down to $500 as it needs new distributor, he reckons he tried to find one for 18 months with no luck. Problem is its in royal park and not running so transport quotes are around $1400 so don't think its worth it, what do you think?

What do you think about the mk2 black gti for sale?
I'm not keen on the steering wheel or the single light conversion both easy fixes I know.

Do you know much about club rego'ing?

A real MK1 GTI is going to set you back over $8000 unless it's a mess, even then it won't be cheap. $500 for the convertible is a great price but the problem with the dizzy is a bit strange as they aren't rare, what else is really wrong with the car? It cost me under $500 to get my (running and rego'd) MK2 from Brisbane to Sydney so $1400 is a bit steep.

If I had the money I'd buy the black MK2. It's not expensive for what you're getting and already has the suspension you want in a MK2. Parts for MK2's are much harder to find, especially body parts so factor that in your calculations.

I've never looked at club rego, my MK2 is a daily driver (over 1000 ks per week) and my MK1 is going to be treated the same when I get it back on the road.

The guy with the black GTI called me and subject to organising transportation at right cost I think I'll buy it, the price his asking is more than fair.

Who did you use for the transport of your mk2 from Brisbane to Sydney?

That's not bad, 1st post yesterday looking for a car and today you're serious about buying one. I used Patricks to transport mine, they did a good job and weren't too expensive.

If you do get it and want to swap the steering wheel for a standard MK2 one let me know, I like the look of the wooden one. Are you getting it with the ATS wheels?

I had been looking around before I joined the forum and I kind of had my mind set on a mk2 so was pretty easy once I saw the black one and spoke to Dave the owner.
Just hope i can now sort transport for right price.

I will be getting it with the ATS wheels but not sure I'm a fan, will wait and see it in the flesh, I'll defo want to swap out the steering wheel not a fan of it at all, so would be keen to get the proper GTI one.

Worst case scenario you put temp rego on it and drive it back. If it's half as reliable as mine it should be good for a lap of Australia without any major issues.

If you don't like the wheels on the MK2 put them up for sale. Most of the MK1 guys think they are the ultimate wheels so you'll have no problems selling them. When I bought my MK2 I sold the BBS wheels which covered more than half the price I paid for my car. Nice little bonus.

Now you need to build up a network of places that can help you keep the MK2 on the road. Matt at Camden GTI has lots of experience modifying the early Golfs and has a few parts. Brian at GTI Imports can get almost anything you need if he hasn't already got it tucked away and Peter Shelley at Canberra VW Centre (located at Kiama) has forgotten more about the early Golfs than most people remember. All are in the phone book.

The Nationals are held in Sydney late May. Saturday sprints at Wakefield Park, Sunday is the Show-and-Shine at Fairfield Showground.

Gives you 2 months to get your car ready.

Congrats. You know it’s going to make your hair go premature gray but you’ll be smiling the whole time.

When you get it make sure you start a thread in the MK2 section. I know Locky would love to see another black one on the forum. Did you get a good deal on shipping or are you going to pick it up?

When you've got a spare hour or two I'll tell you about when I bought mine (twice). I loved it so much I bought it back a couple of years later.

Really happy with the purchase just can't wait to get my hands on it now.

Baden the current owner has been fantastic and really helpful with everything his even going to drive it to the transport depot for me so pretty good guy.

Getting it shipped with ceva costing $570 which is pretty good I think.

Going to try coming to the second day of the Nationals with my oldest boy, his only 5 but loves cars more than me. Lol.
