ok guys ive lowered my mk4 golf and a problem has occurred, as the road is bumpy my drive shaft rubs against the sway bar, is this a common problem for mk4 golfs if its lowered to much or i might have something out of place as ive hit the side of a barrier when i was having fun threw the mountains few months back but car wasnt lowered when i had the incident.

The exact same thing happenned to me...i was having fun on a road in some mountains and after one corner, it all of sudden started scraping. I was told to get drop links for the swaybar which I did but they didnt work - only caused more scraping. And I didnt want to raise it so I bought a H&R swaybar which has more clearance - got that put in and now it doesnt rub!

general rule with mk4 FWD is after a 40mm drop the sway bar will start to cause problems.
Some people seem to get away with a 50mm or so drop.
H&R and one or two other brands apparently have it sorted (even for bagged cars)
end links only work to a point also
I removed my stock sway bar and replaced it with a whiteline (big mistake!), ended up having the whiteline removed and run no sway.
There is a down side of more body roll, but I think there is less under steer now. and no sway lets the suspension move more freely which seems to give a softer ride

I can't say for Mk4 but on my Tig I had to add adjustable links and also adjust the setting on the sway bar so I got clearance from my tail shaft. Also if your sway bar shifts (side-to-side) this may also effect the clearance so re-centring the sway bar may be enough.

I had the same problem man, also put in a whiteline and like Dylan said it was a bad idea, took that out and am not running one at the moment but I think I'll go a H&R front and rear soon too.
A guy on VwVortex also told me a while ago that he ran a mk4 R32 swaybar on both of his (non R32) Mk4's without a problem but I can't confirm if that would actually work or not.Last edited by SLAJ; 07-07-2013, 10:01 PM.

I bought mine off ebay - a seller in USA. This is the exact one I bought:
H R 98 10 VW Beetle Golf Jetta IV VR6 TDI 1 8T Cabrio Wagon 26mm Front Sway BAR | eBay
Except I did have to pay an extra $50 or so for postage because it was too big to send with usps and they had to send with ups instead which got here way quicker anyway.
Edit: I also used the stock linksLast edited by eri_12; 07-07-2013, 07:39 PM.

My MK4 is on lowered springs, whiteline swaybar and the whiteline adjustable links and I have no rubbing at all.
The standard links are not your friend.MK4 GTI: Custom Code Stage 2, K03S, 42DD exhaust, Bilsteins, whiteline F&R, 312mm brakes
MK6 GTI: MY13, DSG , very stock

I have the same issue you've mentioned and I'm on coils with standard front swaybar and FK adjustable drop links. I wouldn't really recommend the drop links after a certain amount of lowering as they're not going to to solve all rubbing problems. One of mine actually broke and so I went back to the standard drop link on that side and haven't noticed any further issues there.
I Might have to look into swaybar removal if I want to go lower. That said, I'm fond of it handling well & don't mind a harsher ride as a result of keeping the swaybar in place.Mk3.Mk4.Mk1
