Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone can help me??? I have a 2007 passat wagon that has the standard radio in it. I want to upgrade to the sat nav (RNS510) but don't know if it will, first, fit in my car and two, drain the battery. And is one from ebay (overseas) ok to get??
I would love for some feedback.
    Cheers everyone!

    1. Yes it will fit
    2. You could be succeptible to the CANbus gateway battery drain issue, read more about it here:
    Upgrading 2nd generation radios (RCD 300, RCD 500) to 3rd generation (RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 310, RCD 510) power drain issue | my-gti.com
There are a few ways around this:
    a) upgrade the CANbus gateway to a newer version (they are available on Ebay also)
    b) upgrade the firmware in the CANbus gateway (you need someone with experience and the correct tools and software to do this
    c) install custom firmware that swaps some files around to prevent battery drain issue (known as 'A' versions of firmware)
    3. yes one from Ebay overseas (Europe) is fine. Just choose a reputable seller and get a rev C or later. Alternately buy one from a local seller who can assist if you need help. There are sellers on this forum
