I haven't tried it but I suppose you could put two bench seats in the back, the issue being access to the third row could be problematic or require some climbing
Plan B is to get the front bench from the Transporter and put that in. I'd ask questions about the legality of this with the airbags in the Multivan.
In any case i think when adding seats it's supposed to be engineered / checked... although it might be very simple if it's a factory part fitted to a vehicle on the same chasis.
If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
Thanks very much Hawk.
Yes, I thought of buying another rear bench seat and putting it in place of the middle seats. But vw doesn't sell the whole seat as an ensemble - you have to buy each component of the seat individually and then put it together which costs an absolute fortune.
Apparently Auto Extras in Brisbane custom make a jump seat for the space between the two middle seats, but given that I want to be able to take real people and not garden gnomes, that is not a viable option.
I was tempted to trade the multivan in on a Caravelle, but I tow a dirty big 26' sail boat (which at a fraction under 2 tonnes is right at the towing limit of VW vans) and I am not sure that the lower powered engine of the caravelle would be able to handle it adequately.
The best bet might be to track down a wrecked multivan and get a second hand rear bench seat.
If anyone knows of a wrecker that specialises in vws I would be interested to hear about them.
Cheers
Would need to get an engineering certificate in most States if you alter seating from whats on Compliance plate.
I removed second row from a Landcruiser for 2years and had to get a plate on it and change the rego papers to the altered seating capacity and redo it as well when I replaced them.
Seatbelt mounts could be a problem
The Modification number for altering seating capacity is LK1
