This sounds scarey stuff, so are we talking contaminated diesel which gets past a filter? I personally use Vortex Premium but should the HPFP fail proving who is at fault would be a nightmare, especially if it was on a country trip say from a sloppy service station or tanker operator, so what sort of contamination are we talking about here? How common is this scenario? I also have just been reading about bugs in the tank and why keeping a full tank is advisable.
Maybe an info sheet should be left on the dash for new Diesel drivers "Things that can go wrong in Diesel Vehicles"?
Personally I have not had any issues with Fuel but heck you have me slightly worried now.

Yes, in the OP case, the failure of the fuel pump at just over 10,000km is unusual and I don't blame the VW that they wanted to have it properly tested to find out what actually went wrong. Of course, if run your engine on diesel fuel mixed with petrol (it could be the petrol station fault, not necessary the car owner's) and then the fuel pump failed 5,000km later it would be very difficult to prove that there was the petrol in the diesel (contaminated fuel).
On average, I receive 1 phone call per month after customer put petrol in the diesel tank. Now how many workshops are in Australia? So, as the diesel cars become more popular with the drivers who are used to buy petrol, the mistakes are more common than lets say 10 years ago.
I'm not saying that this is the OP case but it does happen and the car makers are aware of that.
I use only BP fuel and diesel fuel additive every time I buy fuel. The Moreys Diesel Smoke Killer is the one that I use the most.
Ozram - I did not but my vehicle from Bosch or any of the other companies you mention, I bought a Volkswagen, who they buy their parts from is not my problem and the manufacturer warranty is with Volkswagen not Bosch.
I know you didn't buy your car from Bosch, I never said you did. I was informing you that VW do not manufacture that fuel pump, Bosch do. VW may very well look after the warranty but the part that failed was a Bosch part.
Before I purchased my Tiguan I read a number of articles on this site, I am just ensuring that new buyers also have information on the bad experiences.
Is the internet not a free and open place for opinion?
I'm all for balanced opinions. Unfortunately, introducing yourself to an internet forum for VAG Group vehicles with the line "If you are considering buying a Tiguan and you live in Australia, save yourself a lot of heartache and don't do it." ain't going to endear you to anyone. As I said in my first post, I sympathise with your misfortune. Judging by the responses to the thread some also agree. Put yourself in the dealer's shoes. Would you warrant *every* single HPFP failure without investigating the cause?
You wouldn't have a dealership for long if you did.
Would you still stand by your comment "The customer service I have received has been terrible at best." after reading the responses on this thread?
Kaanage,
Sorry if the 'support' is not what you would expect. Is the internet not a free and open place for opinion?
Bayman,
As I've explained elsewhere on this forum, if your fuel filter has a capacity of 500ml & you have 5 litres of water in your diesel tank, guess where the water will end up? Ruining your fuel pump, rail & injectors. Fuel filters don't filter water. Fuel pump manufacturer's & car manufacturer's don't warrant failures due to contamination. It is not the fuel injection system's fault it has been run on dodgy diesel. The good news is that most insurance companies recognize claims for contaminated fuel. Hell, I've even managed to get a claim accepted for petrol contamination, which I don't really agree with. If you fill up with the wrong fuel you should be made to pay a tax on the repairs. ( I d 1 0 T Tax)
Transporter,
Surprising how often these phone calls come in eh? Agreed, good quality fuel is the best insurance.
