  • NSW Xenons v Standard Headlights

    Hi,

I am stuck between a rock and a hard place with the impending purchase of my new Golf GTI. I have been keen on getting a 5 door, DSG with leather and Xenons. Unfortunately this needs to be ordered and my local dealer cannot give me any sort of production and shipping dates as they haven't got an allocation yet. Problem is that I need a new car by no later than March next year. My dealer rang up last week and said that they have an MY12 with my specs minus the Xenons on a boat here within a couple of weeks. The choice is either wait for my ordered car with a possibility of not getting it by March(disastrous) or getting the already secured car.

Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

I would get the car on order now and just get some uprated globes (i use osram rally bulbs) personally.

It really comes down to how badly you want a different set of lights.

I am leaning towards the secured car. I guess I should remember that the GTI has much more to offer than just great headlights. Thanks for the reply.

If it were me I'd not be losing sleep over the headlights, I'd secure myself the car that I need in time for when I need it. I mean really, come on, they're headlights... they turn on and emit a light beam so you can see the road at night... if that's what makes or breaks your purchase decision on a car, I'm not sure I can really understand.

            I agree with this!
Car already comes with lights that must meet Australian standards (can upgrade the bulbs anyway) so why bother waiting and potentially missing out?

If you must have the car by March, I don't think you'll have time for a custom order - especially if the dealer can't place it with the factory straight away. Depending on circumstances, new GTI orders can take well over 6 months to fulfil (although that doesn't necessarily mean they will).

Some people consider xenons a must-have, but given that you're asking the question, I'd say they're not for you. In which case, go with the car they've found for you - you won't regret it.

                Hi Real Steel,

I was kinda in the same situation as you. I was after a Black MY12 GTI, 5 Door, Manual, Xenons, Leather, and Sunroof. Long story short, I placed an order but "somehow" the car got sold from under me as it was supposedly coming from interstate, even though it should've been secured once I put down a deposit. And also, I needed it before end of January.

Anyways, I was told getting a GTI with xenons already in country was extremely hard to come by especially given the options I wanted. I was also told that if I were to drop the xenons as an option it'd be a lot easier to find what I wanted.

So I went around to a few dealers and ask them if they had any. A couple of them came back with what I wanted, but only in Candy White. My choice was either, going for the original Black minus the xenons and put in some Philips or Osram bulbs, save 2K even though it's not the same as xenons but so much better than standard, or go for the CW with all the options I wanted.

In the end I placed the order for the CW with all the options I wanted, inc. the xenons, as one, I couldn't wait the 5-7 months minimum I was told to place an order just to get my original, two, I really wanted the xenons as it is too difficult and expensive to get it done after (also there are legal issues around it too), and three I think the CW looks hot too.

                So my suggestions would be:

                1. check with other dealers as dealers generally have a better realtionship with other specific dealers interstate to see if they can get what you want (this advice was given to me)
                2. what is more important to you? xenons or getting the car before March? as in the end, you need to be happy with your decision. (I know it's a GTI so either way you'll still be extremely happy )

                Good luck with the purchase

You can probably retrofit oem or similar hids with leveling motors if it's important (now that I have oem hids to be honest I couldn't live with halogens again)
Kufatec or oemplus would have a kit I would think. Should be able to get away with under $2k I would think but don't quote me, just look it up.

Don't forget you get the cool LED DRLS if you option up with Xenon.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The order option is not much of an option as time passes. Its still 'in the system' according to the dealer but I assume it will be removed when the first car gets here. I'm thinking I might just go for the safe option which is still a great car and get the xenons with my next car sometime in the future. March is not realistic for delivery with an order that hasn't been placed yet. Better the realist than the optimist in this case.

                      Cheers.

No one has mentioned this but, do you drive much at night? If not, don't worry about Xenons.....

If you are after 'the look' (LED DRL's) wait or, grab a vRS Octavia!
