Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • First time user, long time fan - Golf R questions

    Hey All,

As stated above, first time user, long time fan.

I have recently decided to get a 'grown up' car, as I have progressed (at least in monetary terms) past my sub $15-20k cars. After much love for the Golf, originating from the Mk5 GTI, I have decided on the GOLF R. This is my first car above $20k, so I'm relatively money-cautious and have questions.

    Golf R (hopefully a MY12)
    - United Grey 5 door
    - Manual (despite what people say/think I love having a clutch and DSG feels too much like auto to me)
    - 19" Talladega Silver (or black - depending on availability)
    - Sunroof
    - Leather
    - MDI + Bluetooth (hopefully I'll get these standard in the MY12)
    - 6 to 8 month wait (which sounds AWESOME!)
Apparently I have boring taste, so in sticking with that rep my preferences are United Grey on Silver 19's.

    Initial questions;

    - I have spoken to a few dealers (some were more helpful than others in Syd), the best price I have come across for all the options listed above was a 'tad' over $60k. Is this a good deal, have many users gotten a better deal than this? (I have already looked at the pricing spreadsheet someone else put on on this site)
    - Has anyone test driven both the Manual and DSG and opted for the DSG? (can't find a manual version to test drive, feels funny to buy a $55k+ car without driving the transmission I want)
    - I tried to search for problems/issues with the Golf R, but haven't really come across too many. What is the worst (biggest damage to the wallet) other Golf R owners have come across so far?
    - How much does it cost to replace the same 19" tyres as the originals?

Many THANKS in advance for all your replies.

    Regards,

Hopeful Future Golf R Owner: Eddie

Any particular reason you went for the Golf R if you are concerned about the wallet?

Unless you really need the AWD system in a ground hugging hatchback there are other cheaper alternatives out there.

      Hey,

Only reasoned I'm concerned about my wallet, is that I've never spent this kind of money on a car before. But I am finally in a place where I can afford the car that I want - being the R. I guess it's more about getting the best deal for my hard earned money.

Okay, i missinterpreted what you were asking then.

The tyre question really depends on where you buy from and what brand you want.
I have 19" tyres on my car that were $200 a corner but they can range up to around $550 per corner depending on the brand and purpose.

I have always been a "manual" guy and I have test driven the R in both manual and DSG back to back. I am still not at your stage of having enough money to by the R, but if I were to buy one, I would go for the DSG. The DSG is a lot faster than the manual and the exhaust sounds a lot better on the DSG as well. The paddle shift on the DSG is fun and give you the manual feeling except it is much smoother and faster than you can do on the manual.

Have you tried Barloworld Mascot for a Manual ? WHen I went there they had both DSG and Manual for test drive and I think they sales people use them as company cars as they have a few KMs on them.

Hey Team_V, all good. Constructive criticism is always a good thing.

Hmm, you're right I should've been more specific. I'm not going to do track days or anything like that, just going to be using it for everyday driving (in style and comfort).

As such, I want an everyday good performer (like the stock ones on the 19's hopefully are). I don't mind paying for quality and I'm more or less looking for a ball park figure. Also if anyone knows the brand and model of the tyres supplied with the 19" talladega rims, that would be awesome.

Do you have low profile tyres on your Tiguan?

Thanks BulkyEgg! I'll give them a call tomorrow. Hopefully they still have both. I've test driven the DSG version, but i just found myself using the normal drive function (maybe it's because I don't know how to use it, but it didn't feel right without a clutch). Although speed and that awesome launch control are definite pros, I'd rather a clutch and a conventional gear stick.

The tyres will either be from Michelin, Dunlop, Bridgestone, Pirelli or Continental. VW use whatever they have on hand at the time. They're all good tyres, but it's a "lucky dip".
In any case, the 19" are for look. Their lower profile causes less comfort and negatively affects handling. Probably not enough that the average person will notice, but...

Stick with 18's if you're worried about cost, performance, and money.

Low profile compared to stock but I am running 245/45/R19

hey Corey_R, Thanks for the note.

You got me, I am getting the 19's for the look. In your experience what would you say would be the best brand out of the one you mentioned?

Michelin Pilot Sport PS3's or Goodyear Eagle F1's are currently the best multipurpose tyre if you are after grip and sportyness.
