On the 1.9 diesel there is a flap like the throttle flap on a petrol engine. (next to the EGR valve which has been much discussed. I know it isn't a choke, and it isn't a throttle, nor is it for a vacuum operated governor which some old tractors had 50 years ago. So what is it for? Is it a retarder for cruise control? or what?

Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I thought we had answered this in another thread? It's there to cause RESTRICTION and create a vacuum just prior to the EGR inlet, so that extra exhaust is sucked in at idle and low throttle conditions. It's purely emissions. It also shuts on stopping to control the shudder on stopping a diesel.2014 Skoda Yeti TDI Outdoor 4x4 | Audi Q3 CFGC repower | Darkside tune and Race Cams | Darkside dump pDPF | Wagner Comp IC | Snow Water Meth | Bilstein B6 H&R springs | Rays Homura 2x7 18 x 8" 255 Potenza Sports | Golf R subframe | Superpro sways and bushings | 034 engine mounts | MK6 GTI brakes |
