Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW Getting sensible?

    G'day all,

Recently picked up a 2003 mkIV golf, turns out it's not the good engine (2.0 litre); Still, I got it for a great price and it's in reasonable condition. Previous rides include a 71 VH Charger and a 96 Toyota Chaser, moved to a Golf to chill out and save some dosh, my last car (the Chaser) was turbocharged and a very capable car but I felt compelled to nail it whenever possible. The Golf is much better suited to commuting.

That said, I doubt I will be able to stand the crashy suspension and (interesting?) handling traits for too long and have some suspension tweaks planned. I will take my time checking out the forum but if anyone has had particular success with coil overs, sway bars, strut braces and sub-frame connectors let me know.

Buying a 4 cylinder hatch and expecting some handling prowess, insanity? Pointless? Time will tell.

cos an early 70's muscle car and a grand touring 4 door sedan are just the pinacle of handleing .... give the little golf a chance, might not have the straight line neddies (1.8t swap would fix that though) but a few suspension mods will have it cornering like nobody's business

Welcome, have a hunt around the VW scene for any length of time and you will find that the word "sensible" isn't exactly applicable to some of the builds

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Okay so the 71 Charger was somewhat nautical in its response, you just called down to the wheel room "Hard-a-starboard" and a few seconds later it would 'come-about', but the Chaser was fantastic! Both the power and handling were so responsive it was like the car was telepathic, you just had to think your way around corners.

As for the sensible thing, in my past car enthusiast lives (Classics and Jap Imports) there was a similar cross-section of car enthusiasts; right from "I just put fuel in it", to "Check out my hyper-sonic bird catcher! The over-locker divvy cam turns up next week! Excuse me while I polish the carbon from the back of the exhaust valves". My budget is strictly limited but I should be able to tweak this little puppy to where I want it.
