Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD Pending Passat CC Purchase

    Hi All,

I'm a newbie and at this point not yet a VW owner. I currently drive a 2008 BMW 320i ... which I love but it's due to be replaced (employer turns cars over at 3 years). I've got to say I love my Black 3 Series but have really been impressed by the Passat CC.

My wife and I had a European holiday in August/September. We'd booked a BMW 1 Series with SixT car rental for 12 days driving in England but we got upgraded to a CC TDI (5 seat version). For the first 4 days we had 3 adults, 2 large suitcases and a few smaller bits on luggage as well as what we'd bought in the 10 days before. Well ... let's just say the car blew me away. And a beautiful car to boot ... Black and awesome.

Unfortunately supply is pretty limited in Oz ... particularly at this time of the year so looks like I'll be ordering one to be built. Now that I've pretty well made the decision to get a custom build I'm just waiting the final pricing with all the selected extras. Hopefully order this week.

Having to wait till June to have the car delivered will have a silver lining. I'm buying the 320 from my employer for my wife. The car will be 3 years old with 55,000 on the clock and we've had it since new. Needless to say she's rapt ... as will I when I get my new baby.

Can't wait to pick colleagues up at the airport. I'll just say I'll be in the little V Dub at the pick up stand.

    Planned purchase looks like this:-

    TDI
Colour - Icelandic Grey, Iron Grey or Black ... ?
    Black Nappa interior
    Walnut Trim with ambient lighting
    Sat Nav
    Rear Camera
    Park Assist
    Lagano 19'' rims
    Stainless Steel Pedals
    Stainless door Sill trims
    and maybe the Dynaudio upgrade
My Car - 2011 VW TDI Black - Lugano Wheels, Auto Park, Dyno Audio Sound, Lights Pack etc etc
    My Wife's Car - 2013 BMW X1 18 S Line Black

Waiting for - 2014 VW Golf Highline 103TSI with Driver Assist - Limestone Grey

      Welcome to the forums.
The Passat CC oozes luxury, it is a very swish looking ride.
Sounds like you have optioned it up well too.
Personally i think they look great in black but colour is always a personal preference.

Hopefully we can get you to come to the Weekly Brisbane meet on Thursday's or the Monthly Euro meet (January 21)

I always say "I won't order another black car" but they always look great. I'm going to try and hold my nerve this time.

Re the meetings ... boy that'd be a tough ask ... me turning up for months in a (South African built) BMW !!

BMW is still a European marque so it's welcome.
The weekly one is not brand specific.

Let us now what you end up going with.
What dealership are you going through?

Have spoken to a stack of dealers trying to track a car down that's already here. I definitely want the MY11 what with the recent upgrades (Bluetooth & MDI as standard) - but seems the choices are very limited even accounting for vehicles down south. Having said that it seems dealers 'hide' a lot of stock so other dealers can't see them.

The company I work for buy a lot of cars from Ian Bottcher's at Ipswich. Nowhere near where our offices are at but they do pretty good deals (according to our Fleet co-ordinator). Anyway we'll see when the final price comes in. Anyone else bought a V Dub from them ?

Hmm ... just heard Bottcher's at Ipswich are about to go under water. Guess I won't hear back from them this week.

Damn it's wet up here !!

Don't want to be the party pooper, but as a major diesel fan on this site - I'm not sure I'd buy a Passat diesel without WRITTEN guarantees it has been fitted with the revised injectors. Passat 125kw TDI's are failing all over the place due to injectors burning out, and I have to say it is the first major downer I've encountered since buying my GT TDI. Not certain I trust it anymore....which is a bummer!

Revised injectors are now being retrofitted upon failure, and seems to mostly affect the Passat, but do some searches in the diesel and passat sections, and read the tales of woe just on this site - let alone the others out there.

I also reckon it's a sexy beast, and I'd love to be able to justify the upgrade to myself let alone the missus.....

                    Hi Greg,

Is there a known fix that the factory has implemented ? If I get one built will it be ok ?

I guess one thing that reduces the impact is that this will be a company car and we turn them over every 3 years. Having said that I would have been likely to buy it for my wife after 3 years ... so maybe that's not a good idea !!

You have thrown a spanner in the works .... but these cars look so good and to be honest I didn't want to pay the extra for the V6 nor have the high fuel costs (and the subsequent impact on salary packaging).

                    Thoughts from others ?

Don't listen too hard to the scaremongering. A big danger of forum sharing is that the focus is almost always on problems people are having; no word from the many thousands who don't have any problems at all with their cars.

If your vehicle suffers with something NQR, just have it fixed if/when it happens. There's always the option to take a further 3 years of warranty, meaning you and your wife are always covered by warranty under your 3 year changeover model.

I love the CC, the base one with few options can be had without LCT, making it probably the best value "luxury" car available.

True. What would I know about diesels.

I'm simply pointing out there are several passat tdi's that have had the exact same pizeo module injector burnout across five diesel forums I frequent. VW recognise they are problematic. I'm sure most cars are indeed fine, but when the symptom is permanent and immediate engine shutdown, well I see those things as worth mentioning. I know of a few greater than average issues with the new common rail TDIs but until it shows up in significant enough numbers I refrain from crying wolf.

Whils ti agree with Gerhard that most of the forum will only provide complaints rather than compliments, i have to agree primarily with Greg.
He knows his stuff when it comes to diesels and I have seen at least 4 threads pop up on this forum over the last few weeks about Passat 125 TDI's dying due to injector failure.

Sure they may be covered by warranty but it is a pretty serious event.

The OP's question was "Thoughts from others".

I wrote my thoughts, and you get in a huff - your problem. There are, as I've said, many thousands of people who are having no problems with their cars, of whatever make or model.

The early Patrol 3.0 diesels had a habit of blowing up, but not all of them did, only a significant number. Many thousands of 3.0 Patrols have criss-crossed the outback country and towed horse floats since then, but only a very tiny number had problems after 2003 compared to pre-2003. The reason - Nissan was aware of the problem (although they tried to hide from it) and made changes to later models which overcame the problem.

As you state, VW is aware of the injector problem, and just Like Nissan they will find a solution and apply it and future CCs will be fine.

I thought the issue was mostly with the pd's not the common rails
