  • Tiguan 147TSI

Hi all..a "first post' introduction...just purchased a Tig 147 TSI with 7 sp DSG. Mostly love it but unsure about the fuel consumption and auto gearbox setup... Have done about 1200kms and am getting worse than 15 ltrs/100km which seems high given the claimed 8.8 (and I'm not a leadfoot esp with new cars!!).

The gearbox seems to have two issues i) sometimes when taking off moderately up inclines it sticks in first or second gear up to 5,000 rpm and no accelerator pedal technique stops this and ii) it often changes to a higher gear going up hills, won't change down and it labours along at somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 revs. I have to floor the pedal to get it to change down...

Neither condition seems right to me and makes for a less-than-pleasant driving experience. The car often feels 'leaden' to drive which is not what I experienced on test drives (of the 6spd DSG)

It's possible I'm doing something wrong (??). Has anyone else experienced these traits?? And no I have not taken back to the dealer (yet), so this may be a premature post...but thought there may some advice available.

All advice and comments welcome ! (Otherwise I just love the solidity and finish of the car, outstanding!) cheers.....

Jeez, i have never got 15l/100km.
Definitely have them check that out.

The DSG delay and hold is annoying to a lot of people from what i have read.

Hope all the issues can be sorted out.
Any pictures of it for us?
    What options did you get?

Is there a Tig DSG "chip" tune out there?

Engines always use more at first, and the computer is also screwy at first on a reset ( like changing a battery ) so perhaps that's a factor?

My old BA GT auto falcon got that sort of economy! Yikes!

        Thanks team_v and Greg...
Not many options...bought Tig off floor with 18" wheels, off road, MDI plus some minor accessories like slim line weathershields, rear scuff plate etc. Aftermarket towbar and (Whisbar or Prorack) roof racks...
Will attempt to upload a photo...

          Sounds good.
I would definitely contact the dealer though and see if they can provide an answer as to your fuel economy figures.
Have you tried resetting them (via the steering wheel controls) as mine were a bitt high when i first got the car due to the delivery process and being run around the dealership in 1st gear etc.

Our 147 has done 2300kms, and we mainly do city driving ( in jams) and our average has been 14-15 litres. It seemed to have improved a bit now, down from the average 15+litres to 13.x litres. I once thought that there is something wrong with our Tig, but then one evening we drove from Belrose down to Blakehurst with 4 people and aircon and did an average of 8.5litres. I think it very much depends on the traffic. Also with the DSG, if you are crusing and take your foot of the pedal, the gear disengages ( like Neutral) and consumes 0 litre/100km until you step on the pedal again, therefore fuel econcomy can be really good driving on highways. Also realised that aircon makes a sizeable difference ,add about 10% to your fuel economy.

My issue with the DSG in D mode is that it changes to 2nd gear too soon and it often starts at 2nd gear if we haven't made a complete stop. but I also feel that the DSG will adapt to your driving style over time. As I start to press harder on the pedal after 1500kms, the DGS seems to hold the first and second gear longer. I drove in S mode the other night, and it was insane! completely different car to D mode.

Maybe try to drive it harder and floor it to force gear change for a while and see if it adapts to that.

I must say that the speed and smoothness of gear changes of the DSG is awesome.

Might pay to get the ecu remapped.
I know most of the Tig owners have seen better economy figures after the remap.

              15L/100km is just insane though.
DSG was meant to better the fuel economy.

I think it is the Sydney traffic which is killing the fuel economy..

cannot agree more with the remap.. I think the issue with DGS gear changes etc will go away as well...

15L/100km is already a big improvement to our previous X5 3.0L , 18.5L/100km was the average...

I assume that your test drive was the older model. I thought the gearbox in that was a tip-tronic auto, not DSG. Perhaps that's why it felt so different?

Thanks all, your wise counsel much appreciated.

Have booked Tiggy in for check Tuesday and will talk to them about a remap of the ECU. (They'll be impressed and think I know what I'm talking about! Hah!

Yes Mountainman it was a non-DSG mdl, you're probably right about the 'feel' aspect...

I wouldn't be talking to your dealer about an ECU remap .... its not offered (officially) by VW dealers and have warranty issues should a VW dealer detect its presence.

Its certainly a worthwhile thing to do ... after all 147kw/280NM turns into 190kw/400NM ... but not a VW dealer thing ...
