After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

          Tassie Plates?

when I purchased my Audi from Qld, I was advised by the WA govt that the car was not registered nor 3rd party insured to drive here and had to be put on to WA rego/plates immediately. I had to obtain a special permit just to drive it from the transport depot to the pits for registration.

You might want to do some research quickly, because you'd hate to not be insured

+1 for checking out your liabilities with Complusory Third Party, and the legality of your own insurance.

You picked up an awsome car, well done!

Hopefully I can move our jetta fairly soon to join the r32 club aswell.

So will you be keeping it standard or do you have plans to add some mods to it?

When I went into the Licensing Centre to change over the plates for my old Mazda3, I asked what the story was and was advised I have 3 months from the date of purchase to go through the pits and get the car registered in WA. I called up again late last week just to check and was told the same thing. I might make one last attempt this arvo, but other than that, I'm going to postpone paying the $1800 stamp duty right till the end.

Yep, Trent has tinted 3 cars for me now, and I was all set to go with some Supreme 22....until I realised I still need to go through the pits, thus tinting will have to wait until I get the car on WA plates (mid-late Jan 2011). Man, it's going to be a hot summer.

Only small scale plans really. Will be placing an order with ECS soon for H&R sways, rear engine mount insert and some Hawk HPS brake pads. Other than that, probably not much. Tint, new tyres before next winter maybe and one day if I have the spare cash Haldex, exhaust and APR tune. She is a very capable package as she is though. Good luck with your plans!

I was told the 3 months was only if you owned the car in the eastern states yourself and you were transferring over, along with the car.

however, if you are Perth-based then you need to do it immediately.

the problem is that the eastern states licensing division would have cancelled their 3rd party liability obligations and registration as soon as the car was sold to you and the transfer papers completed (as you are not a taxpayer over there) and subsequently you dont have cover in WA either.

Typical of goverenments to give different answers every time a call is made.

either way, can i recommend, whatever advice you get, get it in writing, otherwise you'll be screwed if you injure someone and youre not covered.

Thanks mate, genuinely appreciate the advice, and what you are saying makes sense to me. I dare say I might be paying the stamp duty earlier than hoped. =( Oh well.....swaybars and brake pads will have to wait.....maybe.... haha

Yep, East Perth about 5:50am this morning, before work. Great little spot for shots of a Euro.

AFAIK there is a decent period where you can drive on the old plates.
After all, what happens with people driving over on holidays....

                                Official response from DoT...

                                "Dear Bradley,

                                Thank you for your enquiry.

Please be advised that the 3 month transfer period of a vehicle from another state to WA is only valid if you are transferring from that state to WA as a permanent resident. This does not include a vehicle purchased from another state by a WA permanent resident.

If you have purchased the vehicle from Tasmania and are a permanent resident of WA it is unregistered as so as it crosses the WA border. Please ensure the vehicle is registered in WA before driving it.

If you require further information please do not hesitate to reply to this email. Alternatively, you can visit our website, www/licensing or call our Customer Contact Centre on 13 11 56 or +61 8 9427 6404 if you are calling from outside Australia.

                                Kind regards
                                "

Off to the pits I go. Bummer, will have to fork out the stamp duty sooner than hoped....but at least I can get my tinting done in time for summer. :p

Thanks all for the advice. Disappointed it took three attempts to get the correct answer from DoT.
