Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • VIC N00b!

    Hi everyone

I have been in love with old Golfs for a long time...I stupidly made the horrible decision when buying my first car between a cheaper Commodore that was on LPG or a Mk2 Golf.

I am looking to right this decision now I am in a position to do so!

I live in Melbourne now....I have been looking around a bit so far but I am new here and new to the Golf situation.

So I am going to research my heart out...

Is there any pysical place in Melbourne area that sells older Golfs that I should know about?

I will be watching these forums closely as they seem a great resource.

    Depone.

hey mate, welcome to the forum.

this place is a pretty good stop for info and resoources.

There's not too many older golfs floating around, but there will usually be a couple on Used Cars - New Cars - Search New & Used Cars For Sale - carsales.com.au and ebay. A few pop up here everynow and then too.

    good luck with the search!

Thanks I need all the help I can get.

Can find a couple of Cabs around, one grey 1990 which was not really owned by a Golf enthusiast and another 91 white Cab which has by the looks of things been very well looked after. There is another identical cab in a dealership for 6k...Cabs have always appealed to me. They are both in my price range, but i feel like I need to do more research into these 90/91 models before I commit.

There is also 2 93 cabs around...both auto's...I am unsure if I would like to get an automatic Golf it would kinda take the fun out of it.

There is of course a certain GTI that has been advertised here and another MK1 that from what i can see has had alot of love put into both of them.

Yea, there's a few floating around.

Mk 1 GTI's are generally very few and far between, hence the asking price on them! If you wanted to one, i'd get onto it quick smart!

There's a 2 door 16V mk 2 on ebay (in canberra, but it's only a 7 hour drive ) that's pretty tidy and very well priced! Defiantly something that's worth a look, and worth while having!

if I hadn't just bought my cab a little while back, i'd be all over that one!

            Thanks Jarred...Will check it out.

            Have found a mk2 gti cab I think...looks interesting.

Yes well I've rushed car decisions before and it has ended me in a world of regret ( and mechanic bills! ).

Spewing I missed the VW club swapmeet on the weekend in Williamstown...would of of been a great opertunity to have a chat with some Golf heads.

              HA!

              What a N00b I am.

I have been doing a bit of reading and have since found out there are no Mk2 Cabrio's and certainly no GTI Cabrio's.

It is all a learning experience.

Is there a reason why there are lots of Cabrio's for sale and not so many other early Golfs?

Are they not as popular with Golf heads because of the slightly different structure?

mostly cause the old ones have rusted away.

not many golf fans in aus, so they more often than not end up on the scrap heap instead of getting saved.

and we only got mk 2's out here for like 2/3 years, not the full run.

                  Such a shame!

Checked out Volkspower yesterday...really helpful guys.

He has a Cabrio for sale which has
hail damage...he spent about 3k before the storm on it.

He said he will repair the roof and would sell it to me
for 3500 with the damaged bonnet. With a new bonnet it would be 5k.

That is def an option just getting it with the new roof and damaged bonnet...It would be a
safer buy because it's coming from a good home and it has been repaired by
                  VW specialists.

There are a few other options out there...some rego'd
                  and one not...

Back to the research for me....

                    Ok...

This past week has been alot of learning and I'm glad I just did'nt rush out and buy the first Cabrio I seen or something stupid like that.

I have been up all hours reading and my eyes sting from looking at the mk1 and mk2 picture threads.

Currently trying to read into the benifits of a Diesel engine....If anyone has any good refrences that would be most helpful.

                    The search/research continues.

Done a bit of research into GLD's...Does'nt look like the car for me.

Looking forward to checking out koztek's mk2 and the gti.

Pitty the Cabrio's are so sluggish...They appeal to me for novelty factor I think, but at the end of the day that wears off and I would hate to buy one and end up with a regret. ( that may not happen though as I can see there are some more than happy Cabrio owners here )

diesels aren't for everyone, but I love em personally. good fun.

I reckon that chapangey colour mk 2 south african importin phran would be defiantly worth a look. by all accounts it should got like a rocket ship for a mk 2 gti (non 16V)

Checked out Kostek's mk2....very nice ride with a few extra bits and pieces thrown in, really feeling it. Seats and interior aint great but thats something I could maybe work on doing myself if I get it.

Having a swatch at the GTI this arvo I think.
