Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Multivan Radio upgrade

Hi all i have just bought a VW Multivan comfortline 2010 which has the RCD310 radio installed and i am looking at upgrading this to something like the RNS510. Does anyone know if this will work in the comfortline and whether it is a straight swap or not?

I just picked up a MY10 Multi a few months back. Supposedly there are issues with the RNS510 in the new Multivans which meant that when opting for a dealer installed unit I had to pick an alternative or wait for a fix.... Still yet to hear about a fix...

The alternative was a Pioner AVIC FB20T which has Bluetooth, reversing camera and iPod integration as well as the sat nav and DVD etc etc. As a unit it's pretty good, the only issue is that in my Multivan still can't receive radio properly and I'm waiting on an aftermarket antenna to be installed to hopefully fix the problem. No one seems to know why it needs this or why there is a problem (the stock unit works perfectly). Also no clue if the problem is limited to this particular model or anything other than the stock units.

I will be very interested to hear how things turn out since I'm having issues .

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Thanks for the info. I have had no issue's with the radio reception so will look at the Pioneer and see what the cost is - any clues as to where to shop? Do you know if the install is straight forward?

Installation of a new head unit looks pretty straight forward (as far as these things are ever straight forward). You just need the appropriate adaptors and brackets etc. In my particular units case there are extra wires for the camera, mic, hand brake, speed sensor etc.

Mine was done by the dealer's audio guys so I don't have first hand experience, although I have seen it pulled in and out a few times while they have tried to fix the reception issues and would happily tackle the task myself if it's ever needed.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Thanks, I have pulled my RCD310 out to see how it was done so no worries there. Do you know if more cables need to be run for either the pioneer or rns510 (if they sort out that issues) or are they already there and ready to go? I would like to put in a reverse camera but am unsure if cables have been run for this feature or it would be something I need to do? Do you know how I could get hold of a wiring diagram for the Multivan 103kw 2010?

            Antenna woes?

I have the RNS2 Sat Nav in mine (useless in Middle East), and in researching replacements I've seen that you may need to provide power to the stock antenna. If you have a boosted antenna, but the power wasn't provided, reception will be poor.

Some of the VW antennas are also "diversity", which means two antennas operate in tandem to strenthen signals and discard static. When fitting to an aftermarket unit with only one antenna input, one signal is usually unused, and also results in poor reception. Special antenna-specific adaptors needed in both cases.
