Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD Newbie Intro :)

Thought I'd introduce myself.. I'm Jacob, I'm on the Gold Coast. I own a 1998 Golf MK3 and its my first car and I think it's about time to have some fun and get creative with it! It's dead stock at the moment but it hopefully won't be like that for much longer
I have some clear tail lights currently replacing the old yucky ones and have a friend cutting up a checkered vinyl pattern for my side mirrors. The photos you see with checkered side mirrors were just a trial I did with paper to see how it would look. Also the back of the rear view mirror might also be checkered (or is that overkill?)

    Here's a not-well-thought-through rough list:
    - Some sort of DTM Exhaust or at least something similar
    - Some well fitted wheels, probably 16" with the aid of some rolled guards
    - A set of halo headlights... maybe.
    - Stubby Antenna, just cause my current antenna is getting grainy and resembles a fishing rod.
    - Tinted windows
That's as far as I've thought. Tinting the windows and replacing the antenna may not be consider as 'modifying' haha but a simple weekend job and a hectic yr12 schedule doesn't leave me much time to do anything drastic. Good things take time, am I right? If you guys have any suggestions to what I can do please tell
Enough with the talk, here's my Golf: p.s the badge's are now matte black

And here was a bit of fun I had,

    Welcome to the forums mate.
    Nice ride for your first.

I would get the stubby antenna from dubaddiction, Tim is very good to work with.
Mastertint did my new VW and they were very cheap.
Ebay/tirerack etc may be the best bet for your wheels.

I would white out the mirros and the side bump strip and then rock it like that.

Keep up the good work adn take tonnes of progress pictures.
And don't let anyone tell you the antenna is not a modification, it was the first thing i did to mine.

Brilliant. Thanks a lot mate. I'm really naive when it comes to sourcing parts, I'm not entirely sure of how common parts are around GC etc. I had had a look at Super Cheap Auto and similar stores for stubby antennas with no luck. I'll definetly get in contact with Tim, thanks again Be sure to hear more questions from me

Oh by the way, when you say 'white out the mirrors and the side bump strip' I assume you're saying white out the wing mirrors and white out that black strip along the side... how would I do that exactly? haha (here come the questions )

Looks like a great base to start with mate, looks clean and stock which is great!

The mirror covers and side strips come of very easily, take them into a paint shop and voila, colour coded!

Take a good look around the MK3 section in here and dont be afraid to use the search bar up the top

            This!

Also look at getting some smoked front bumper light surrounds. to match the black and white stormtrooper look.

Make sure you get genuine Hella lighting.
I got mine off ebay and it works a treat.

I would reccomend TMtuning for this sort of thing.

Be careful when buying lights from overseas, make sure the lights are designed for RHD cars not LHD

If you decide to change the headlights, Id be keen on your old ones!
