Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD Hi from Brissie

    G'Day ...

I am new to VDubs. Just bought a 96 MK3 GL Golf for my Daughter. Picked it up for 2295 on ebay.

Needs a couple of tyres. The Bloke who owned it bought it for 6700 a year and a half ago. I have cleaned it up a bit. It drives pretty good. Have There is a couple of things like the headlining has sagged but all in all I think it is pretty good. Few scratches reound the rear bar ... I am sure she will do a few as well being her first car.

    I have a few questions ...

The passenger front and rear windows do not work ... Just a click when you press the button. Is this the dreaded Reg problem?

The engine number starts with AGG... Is this a 1.8L or 2.0L?

The VAG connector near the lighter. You can buy cables of eaby pretty cheap. Which one should I get and what software is good to use.

I look forward to meeting you blokes in here.

    Cheers

    Max, That looks very tidy!

Rosstech.com do the software and cable, although you could get away with an ebay cable on it and google the software

AGG is a 2 litre, given away by the twin tailpipes.

Dead windows could be electrics but the window regulators are made of plasticine.

Sounds like window regs, there's a plastic clip that follows a metal rail in the door as the window gets pulled up, and they seem to break alot.

Cool golf buggy too, there's a few houses near me where people have sheds opening right onto the course (might even be the same one).
          Hi Joe,

Thanks ... It is pretty straight. It seemed like a pretty honest car for it's age. That is why I bought it. I spent the day polishing it and giving it a tidy up.

It is funny. The bloke who I bought it from thought it was a 1.8. Here is the Vehicle data page off the service manual. It says 85Kw. Is that 2.0L?

Mate ... We are not near a golf course. Dad who is 86 and lives with us played golf up until last year. We have a couple of acres and he uses the Buggy to get around the place.

          Cheers

            G'Day Gavin,

Mate ... I saw the Rosstech stuff. It looks pretty good. There are a few cables that are sold. Do you know which one? There are OBD and OBDII etc. I am a total newbie to this.

I will have to find some new regulators then. The is a Europen wreckers around the corner from where I work. Hopefully they wont be too dear.

            Cheers

Yes ... I am pretty happy with it. I really don't understand why the guy I bought it off did not clean it up and trade it in. He would have got more for it.

My daughter is stoked. She has another 30 hrs to do and then a test. So she can't wait.

I wanted something safe, economical and easy for her to drive so I hope it will be a good thing for her.

              Cheers

Yer it is a cool colour. Metalic Black. It has a nice silver sparkle in it.

Hopefully it will be good for my daughter for a few years.

Here is couple more pics ... I forgot to put them in.

All Parts for it will start with a 1H........
                      AGG motor is Mk3

WINDOWS - i had the exact same problem not long ago, and everyone i spoke to (experts and mechanics) said it was the regulator and the VW specialist said it was a faulty ignition barrel (which it wasn't even close to being that). I went and bought a new one and installed it and had the same problem. It actually turnout out to be the motor. Some winding had burned out on it (apparently)

Suggest you take both the door inners off and pull the regs and motors out and check them. It seems a bit daunting, but it isn't that bad. You just have to make sure WHEN you take the motor off the regulator, you dont lose the tension in the winder mechanism. You'll need a small Hex key ot take off the small bolts. Even if you do accidently lose the tension, you can retesnion but its such a pain in the butt as you need 3 hands to do it.....

I picked up my regulator from http://www.kmjeuroparts.com/ for $100 brand new. They also wrecks a lot of VW's.

I picked up my motor 2nd hand thru Blue Cross Motor hospital, at about 1/3 the price of a new one. They are about $500 brand new...and come from singapore, so might take some time to get here...

FORGET GOING TO AUSTRAL unless you want total genuine parts.

Thanks very much ... Lots of info!

I think I saw on here somewhere how to take the door skins off.

Yes ... It is an Auto ... I knew I should not of shown that pic!

It is for my Daughter so she is happy.

There is a click from within the door when you press the button to wind down the window. The previous owner said that he had to go overseas for 5Mths and when he got back they just stopped working. It is a bit odd.

I will investigate this weekend and see what I can see I suppose.

                          Thanks again for your help.

Doode ... Went to KMJ ... I actually work around the corner from them. They quoted me 150 for an old reg and 225 for a new reg. Looks like the deal has changed unfortunately.

Luckily I found a US company Deutsche Parts USA that sells OEM Front Regs for USD$32 + USD$30 delivery. So landed it is about 75 bucks aussie.

Pulled the other one out and it was buggered. The motor is fine though.
