Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hello

    Hey guys and girls,

I have just put a deposit down on a Mk3 GL golf 5spd pending RACV check on Monday. I've always been a massive fan of the VW range growing up around Kombis, beetles and Type 3's. However personally only ever owned and moddified older Jap cars; Dattos, Corollas, Geminis and rotors. So im fairly excited to get it, add to that i have no car as it was written off last week, hence me buying the golf.

I have a few issues with the car i have purchased, i'll list them here but i'm not sure if this is the correct sub-forum to do so, if someone could help me out with the right forum?

    Problems:

Tacho and speedo don't work - I assume this to be a earthing problem/plug loose as its both of them?

Power windows don't work/very slow, after speaking to a mate about this he seems to remember his sister had the same problem with her golf. Are power window motors a common part to fail in golfs/Mk3s? And if so what fails? i assume the bushes in the motor?

other then that the cars lovely to drive, i use it primarily to get to uni (bach Mech Engineer) and back, So its just my daily.

My other car is a 1977 Isuzu PF50, Delivered on the Aus market as a Holden Gemini; 1.8L SOHC, Turbo running 10Psi with a T28, Fuel injection (came carby) using a megasquirt ECU, custom manifolds, 350cc injectors. Aiming for around 200kw. But that's another story.

I appreciate any help that you guys could give me and look forward to being an active member of your forums,

    Thanks,
    Pat

Also another point, I purchased the car with horrible 'Alteza' rear lights, where would be the best/cheapest place to pick up a set of standard Mk3 lights?

      Welcome mate.

We do mail order all over Australia.
I have rear taillights on the shelf, no problem.

Sounds like you will need a new instrument cluster too, its a known fault. I bet the temp and fuel gauge still work.

Mk3s are very riliable, except for the windows, but thats another saga.

haha yes the Fuel and Temp still work. Im told by the owner they work occasionally, all common symptoms? are you able to source new instrument clusters as well? If you could send me a PM (or post it here if you prefer) a price for these parts (lights and cluster) that would be fantastic, otherwise i will give the number in your signature a call tomorrow.

I gather i am correct in assuming the windows are a common fault? are the parts easy to source? a price for those would be great, if you stock them.

        Cheers Pat
