G'day people

I bought a 1997 Golf CL 1.8L 5sp on friday, cost me $5000 (only done 108000kms)

im pretty stoked, love the car

here are some pics:







it does need a few fixes:

Central locking doesn't want to work (any help?)


other issues soon to be fixed:

new tyres/wheels and wheel alignment
replace a few hoses and belts
paint has flaked off in a few areas (any suggestions?)
small crack in the windscreen
might need to replace front brake discs and pads at some point as well


i would like a bit of advice regarding the central locking if anyone has any thoughts, and also maybe a quick estimate of how much the above will cost?

Clean CL you have there, yes every MK3 has the rear washer jets you have to press the wiper stalk foward and hold it to engage the rear washer jet.

turns out i don't have fog lights (lol), headlights are fixed (new bulbs)

I would still like some advice on the central locking, and maybe where i could get it repaired, or even if it were possible to have a crack on my own?

Also, where might be a good place to pick up some nice alloys (new or 2nd hand)?

Im in ermington

lol today the battery died, dad came around to jumpstart me and put the jumper cables on the wrong way!!!! even melted one of the cables
NRMA came around got a new battery, luckily no fuses blown (good one dad), battery was almost 5yrs old so i guess it wasnt an overly premature replacement

I'm still wondering how to get the central locking fixed up, i can hear some buzzing from somewhere in the rear after locking/unlocking the drivers door so it seems to be trying to work...but doesn't

Quite right, I had a similar problem in my GL where it was a line in the rear left door which had been cut by a ham fisted panel beater

You can pull the pump out of it's holder and see if it's working easy enough, if it is, you know there is a leak in the line... Finding it, well... depends on where the break is, you can pull all the door trims off and see if there is anything obvious (like a loose/broken connector.

Plan B: Remote central locking.

I bought one of these by mistake, I wanted (and used) just the remote receiver, but bought the kit with 4 central locking motors as well. It should be simple enough to wire in the 4 mechanisms if the pump ever fails.

You get the joy of a cool flip key + remote central locking for £29.95 + shipping (or about AU$95 delivered to your door. Installation will either be free if you do it yourself (if you get the current pump working right it's all of four wires, if you don't you add 8 more, so it's not exactly hard.

yeah, pulled out the pump and some important looking bits at the back end of the electric motor were shattered (actually they are the bits that are spun to create the vacuum)

anyone know where i could get this fixed?

wow, rang up a VW dealer,

new central locking pump: $682.50

might go for a jaycar one... though im not too confident in pulling bits off doors without breaking anything, is there a "how to" on pulling the lining off the doors?
