Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Went and checked one out at a dealer in Sydney today. They wern't that interested in letting me test drive it but in reality i am not buying for at least a few weeks. Loved the interior. Seems like a really well made car too.

For those R32 owners out there; they are obviously great cars for having a 'spirited' drive in, but what are they like around the city in traffic and cruising up the motorway?

For cruising on the motorway they're great and you get reasonable economy out of them at about 9.5L/100km (not great but reasonable). A CAI improves on this. If you do the flapper mod there is some exhaust noise but if you don't it's plenty quiet.
Around town depending on how much stop start you do you will find the economy can be quite bad (around 14L/100km). Clutch wise and driving in the city though is easy as long as you're happy to drive a manual around town you should have no dramas. The suspension is a bit stiff of course and the nose is quite low so you have to be careful of that but it depends on what you're willing to put up with.
It's no cruisy BMW or Mercedes but at the same time it's not like you're driving a Ferrari around town either.

Yea not too fussed about driving manual in city. Won't be a commuter so will only be for social/weekend duties.

My 205 has a massivly loud exhuast note (3000rpm at 100kmh which pretty much gives you permanent hearing damage). So as long as it is quieter than that i am ok. The girlfriend pretty much refuses to go in it on longer drives.

          Thanks for the response.

Yeah you'll be fine then. The exhaust is loud when you do the flapper mod but it's still legal and it's a glorious, sonerous good loud. Only thing you got to be careful of as I said is the nose.
            Cheers,

I've had mine over a year now and it hasn't missed a beat. I bought it with a full VW service history and about 76000kms on the clock. I'm up to nearly 96000kms now no issues at all. Fantastic car. I'm pretty sure JVLR32 hasn't had any issues with his either and his has about 150000kms on the clock. Other people I know with them haven't had any issues either. Even Al (quozl) with his targa spec one, mechanically I don't think it's missed a beat.
Given that they were made at the end of the MkIV life cycle, I think you can pretty much expect that any gremlins had been worked out by then and overall the MkIVs were a pretty reliable beast anyway.
                Cheers,
                Trent
