  • Looking for a MkIV R32...

    Hi All,

Currently driving a Peugeot 205 GTi (the fun/twisties car) and a heavily modified Jeep Wrangler (offroad) but am getting sick of old cars and paying two lots of rego. The plan is to try and offload both of them (which will be hard as i love them both) and find an R32 for the right price.

Seems there are a lot advertised for about $35,000 at the moment that have been for months without going anywhere. Anyone know what people are actually paying for these lately? My thought is closer to $30,000.

What are the service costs like as well? I have always serviced my own cars but now (hopefully) getting a newer and nicer car i will leave it to the pros.

Anyway i hope to join your fold one day in my very own MkIV R32. Congrats on a great forum.

A mk IV R32 is an excellent choice - there are a few for sale in here if you search $30k might get you a cheapie, but $35k would get you a good one.

Theres 13 listed on Carsales between $30k and $40k

also, if you can afford to stretch yr budget a bit, check out Adrian's unbelievable GTI http://www.carsales.com.au/all-cars/...90442&trecs=98

    or http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...hlight=porsche

suggest you also look interstate, theyre are rare enough to justify buying elsewhere and paying up to $1k for delivery

Thanks for the reply. I have been watching the ones on Carsales and have noticed that a lot have been there for a while. Was thinking maybe people are asking too much. Can't wait to get into one!

i disagree, i think in todays market $30K will get you a very good one with decent negotiations. have a quick drive around your local car yard area and look at the ridiculously cheap prices that cars are available for. i agree it used to be $35K for a decent one but definitely not anymore.

        e.g

        - 2000 porsche boxter, 120,000k's, $35K
        - 2007 Integra Type S, dumped, 19's, intake system, $24K
        - several 2003+ merc's under $30K
        - even more 2004+ beemers under $30K
        - 1996 Mitsubishi 3000GT, 100,000k's, $16,990K

thats just a few....at the one car yard!!

also, remember, those prices on carpoint are only asking prices, i'm sure there is a lot of movement in those prices.

True Polo, they are only starting prices.

glad i'm not looking at selling at the moment!!

I was looking at an R32 at the beginning of the year but couldnt justify the extra price, which seemed to be high $30s.

Still, got myself a fantastic, hot S3 instead

That's why i don't get the inflated price of the MkIV. I know the rarity is something but still...

In some countries the mk4 costs more than the mk5 on the used car market.

Its all about supply and demand. The mk4 was a limited edition. They built as many mk5s as they could sell.

its still the inflated price from last year when the market was strong. it would be interesting to see how many 2nd hand MKIV R32's have been sold since March this year and how much people have paid for them.

the sellers still have their heads in the clouds regarding the current value so i wouldn't imagine many would have sold. it would only take a couple of decent ones to drop their asking price and the whole lot would be forced to.

i understand the exclusivity of the IV R32 but i don't think it's good enough to be less that 10K less than the V R32. at the end of the day, it's a 5 year old car. maybe one day when they are VERY rare they will go back up in price like the VW Motorsport Golf Limited Edition G60....mmmmm, now thats a car!

what am i talking about, nothing compares to that!

Trez, hang on to your beast mate!!

                        Definitely doing that mate.
Even with the mods I'm doing, I'm keeping all the original parts as well so I can put it back to genuine if I want to. At the end of the day prices will only be what the market will pay, but with no further R32s in the future the MkIV and even the MkV to an extent will hold their values quite well.
Gareth, I originally was looking for an S3 but got the R instead as the price was right at the time. Also any unmolested MY02 S3 was more than what I paid for the R anyway.
                        Cheers,

How reliable are R32's? I know it will depend on maintenance etc but just hjoping they arn't too tempremental. Had enough of that with the 205!

guess he ended up selling it to the dealer.

The guy who owned that was also named Trent. He was on OzAudi. Didn't post much but it was definitely a sweet ride. He had 19" BBS CHs on it and it looked fantastic.

I've had mine over a year now and it hasn't missed a beat. I bought it with a full VW service history and about 76000kms on the clock. I'm up to nearly 96000kms now no issues at all. Fantastic car. I'm pretty sure JVLR32 hasn't had any issues with his either and his has about 150000kms on the clock. Other people I know with them haven't had any issues either. Even Al (quozl) with his targa spec one, mechanically I don't think it's missed a beat.
Given that they were made at the end of the MkIV life cycle, I think you can pretty much expect that any gremlins had been worked out by then and overall the MkIVs were a pretty reliable beast anyway.
                            Cheers,
