Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW Polo GTI radiator replacement

Just having the radiator assembly in my 2017 Polo GTI replaced. Was told it is much more complex in the GTI - is this right?

Correct, it is much more involved than a standard Polo TSI.

I have done both. The radiator cradle, fan shroud and the fans are different for both, as is the radiator itself. The A/C condensor is the same though. As an extra, the GTI has a front mount intercooler in the cradle too, which does not exist in the TSI Polos.

Replacing any component of it, means it is a full bumper off job. Everything comes off (even the headlights).

EDIT: Thinking about it, the "complexity" of the job is actually very similar. What is materially different is the costs of the individual parts ... everything on the GTI is more expensive, probably simply because of lower volumes being made/sold specifically for the GTI.

This is what a Polo GTI looks like from the front with the bumper already removed. Everything needs to be removed to get to the radiator which sits behind the grey coloured A/C condensor (that looks like the radiator, but isn't).

Reviving a thread here - I'm about to head down the same road ('17 Polo GTI) - is it best to go with a genuine VW radiator, or are there OEM quality aftermarket options available?

For a radiator, quality aftermarket is far far cheaper. Sterling Parts Australia | Car Parts Online | Your Aftermarket Specialist

              Hey me too.

Just been quoted $1600 to replace the radiator in my 2016 Polo GTI! That's a no, however I know what I'll be doing over the Christmas break.

Thanks for the information about Sterling parts.
