Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • D2 or D4 Blinking 7speed-DSG - Jetta 2009 TDi 1.6

I started driving the car as normal and noticed something wasnt right. I looked into dashboard and D2 or D4 sign in the dashboard is blinking. I changed it to S and same S2 or S4 depending on the speed/gear was also blinking.
Other thing which is happening is that i can only see car starts from D2 and directly switches to D4. Does not go to D1 or D3 or higher than D4.
I then switched to manual and same thing happened only D2 or D4. Later I noticed that engine light (orange) is also visible in the dashboard.

    Any clues

You might want to get a mod to move this post to the Jetta section, so it can help others if they have the same issue.

The blinking D2 + check engine light would indicate that the transmission has gone into "limp mode", so reduced power and shifts.

Your other post mentions you had an oil cooler leak, was it the transmission oil to water cooler by any chance?

Thanks for your reply, the previous repair was related to Engine oil cooler, which was replaced. (Engine Oil Filter Housing w/ Cooler (1.6lt/2.0lt) | GMS )

I just went back to the car and tried to start it, but it kicks when i try to start it as it thinks its in a gear. Reminds me of old manual cars when you try to start it while its in gear as it kicks/jumps forward.

I tried to move the gear lever into N and same it kicks/jumps forward as it think its in gear and does not start.
I tried to move the gear lever into D and then back into P , switched ignition on off, same it still jumps forward and does not start.

Does this behavior's gives any further clues . I was hoping to atleast drive it to a VW mechanic to get looked at but now i cant even start or drive it anymore.

When i put my foot on the brake it feels extremely hard to press and stiff, I think the car is not going into N or P even though its showing it is in the dashboard and probably stuck in 1st gear.

Is there anything i can do or look at to disengage the gear any other way?
