Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hey Guys - New to the forum!

    Hey Guys,
I'm Raj and have just purchased my first car - which so happeneds to be a golf mk3 (1997 CL) ! I first wanted to get a golf with a bit more bang maybe the GL but I guess seeing the economy I get from the car I'm starting to warm to it. I bought the car last week and now I'm really in love with it! I installed a sound system and now I'm pretty sweet with it. If anyone has a say on the car or anything i should do to it to increase the performance without burning a hole in my pocket please respond! I'm just really bummed about the slow performance. Thanks!

    Welcome aboard!

    You need two things:

    1. To go with that sound system one of these:

    2. To make it go faster, one of these:

On the upside, your windows will never break

I don't know there is a lot of power to pull out of that engine unfortunately, the best you can do is save some weight and improve the intake and exhaust, otherwise you start to spend lots of money, none of which you would really want to start with a CL as a base (unless it was a 3dr)

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

I thought old guys with 18 kids didn't need a big sound system...?

        Wrong again, huh?

Nothing like The Wiggles blasting through a 12" Sub

Welcome Unfortunately with the 1.8L (and 2.0L) we're quite stuck when it comes to performance mods. Intake + exhaust may liven things up a bit but you'll won't increase much power. Any decent power increase will lead to debt increase too

Get decent suspension into the car and make it a fun drive through corners. Live by the "low and slow" mantra
              Past: Mk3 Golf 2L 8V, Audi 8L A3T.
              Present: Mk3 Golf variant.

Oh I do have a 12 inch sub myself - so I've already done the music system side of things. Yeah I thought there wasn't going to be much - I guess it's the mileage I get from it right ? It's great on fuel and it's a good car I guess. I had been driving my brothers Calibra for 3 months before I bought my own car - and I'm just missing the good performance out of it.

Welcome to the site. You want the 270 degree 8v cam here

We are sorry, but this page cannot be found. If you have any questions or can't find what you are looking for, please contact us .

Will allow the car to make better power in the higher rev range without losing low end torque. Had one it worked great.
