Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Need advice on second hand Golfs and Polos before buying!

Hi and welcome. Just avoid the 7 speed DSG (used in all Polo's and the lower spec Golf's). So either get a manual or get the 6 speed DSG (as found in more powerful Golf's like the TDI or GTI etc).
As for engines, avoid the 118TSI at all costs (the 1.4 twincharge engine with a supercharger and turbocharger).
So basically...
Polo: get a manual
Golf: either get a 90TSI manual, or get a TDI or GTI with the speed DSG if you want an automatic.
Note the Audi A1 and Skoda Fabia are based on the Polo, so if you are considering these, use the same advise as I have given for the Polo.
