Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Officially it needs to be a 504.00/507.00 VW Approved Oil. There's a few on the market and yes they are fully synthetic - usually $60-$80 for 5L.

I searched that mostly 502 is referring to 5w40. I check mine the helix ultra, it is stated 502. Can't be used in this case ?

If you end up with engine failure due to an issue with the oil and you've used a non-approved oil you don't have a leg to stand on. If you've used oils then you have half a chance. Also note there's a difference between "approved" and "meets" or "tested to" or whatever other marketing terms that they want to use saying it is "equivalent". Basically if you're using an oil that "as good as" then if there's an issue you'll be going back and forth between the oil company and VW and more than likely both of these guys have deeper pockets than you for legals.

Long story short you're best off paying a bit more and using an approved oil.

But it's your car and your engine so you can out whatever oil in it you like
