Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Another noob! T4 TDI syncro.

Hi all, recently (July) purchased a 2003 T4 TDI SWB syncro.
Slowly working my way through maintenance issues. So far done timing and injection belts, tensioners, water pump. Replaced all engine and gearbox fluids and filters. Fitted cruise control, repaired wiper switch, fixed intermittent wipers ("99" relay had been swapped into incorrect location). Repaired fuel sender to fix extreme hard starting from air leaks into fuel system just under 1/2 tank full. Built a rock n roll bed with slide out kitchen bench. Replaced faulty igntion switch.

Next to do list is fix air con, modify and fit second hand bull bar, build rear wheel carrier. Auxiliary battery electrics for rear camper stuff. Maybe look at remapping? Tidy up electrics where some idiot has fitted a second immobiliser over the top of the standard one.

Any tips on to do list items gratefully accepted!

Other interests: motorcycles Honda xl350, BMW K100, Yamaha XS 1100. Sidecars. Peugeot 308 HDI. Navara STX diesel. Workshop time welding, lathe, milling machine.

    cheers,

    Brewer.

Welcome to this forum Brewer. You sound like you are very capable mechanic & interesting person with your interests. I don't know how many Syncro owners there are here but I have met another who lives around an hour from where I live. We recently worked together replacing all the belts & water pump on both of our vans He is around 20 years younger than I am & can get up & down much quicker than I can.
How many ks has your van done?
Understand how it works, troubleshoot logically BEFORE replacing parts.

My Syncro has 192000 km or the clock, I have done about 5000 of those. I bought it sight unseen with "timing belt failure" but fortunately only both tensioners had failed and timing jumped 1 tooth, no damage. It is ex hydro electric co, has quite a few options, dual airbags, abs, edl = "electronic diff lock" - really just traction control. Dual battery pirahna controller, air con but not working, reverse camera, towbar. I have been getting around 7.5 l/100 km so quite economical. It has had the short shift gear linkage mod previously done. Very comfortable to drive, all in all I am rapt! The 4wd is quite capable even to the point that the 4wd Navara is hard to justify keeping. Cheers, Brewer.

Forgot to ask, Jets, do you have a copy of wiring diagramme that you could send me to help with the air con trouble shooting. Thanks, Brewer.
