Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Vw- kms stored in the cluster or the ecu? 2009 Jetta

    Hey all.

Hoping someone has the answer to this, does changing the cluster impact the kms displayed on the car?
Are the kms stored in the cluster or in the ecu?

My last car the kms were stored in the ecu, so a cluster swap didn’t impact the kms displayed for the vehicle.
Curious if this is the same for Vw’s.
    Car : Vw Jetta Tsi, 2.0L 147kw.

Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers

The immobiliser code is stored in the cluster as well as the kms.

      Hey Umai.

So this would Likely need to be reset to allow the immobiliser to function correctly ?

No, they're not related as such.

You can't easily alter the odometer reading on them, but the dealership should be able to re-program a used cluster to another car.

        What's the problem with yours?

Immo is in the cluster in a Jetta.
In the Passat it's in the CCM making a cluster swap quite easy as long as KMs are set to under 100 making it a new part...

KMs are in the cluster but also in the ecu.

There are tools which can read out the immobilizer block from your existing cluster, then write that same block to the new cluster so it matches your ecu and allows the car to start.

Dealer tools I don't think will allow a used cluster to be used. Has to be new or have KMs reset to zero.

Thank you both for your replies.
More a curiosity thing at this stage.
Saw a neat looking gti cluster, mine is bearing a few cosmetic scratches only, nothing to scary.
Was just curious of the impact on the displayed kms if I were to swap the clusters out.

Had stublmed across previously the kms being stored in an ecu and not on the cluster, hadn’t even crossed my mind the potential immobiliser related issues.
Thus it’s best to ask first!

            Many thanks for the information.
