Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Or the other option is that the mk4 has been modded to it's limits whereas the stock mk5 GTI has a lot more potential (see Guy's for a still drivable GTI - over 200kw).

Plus the mk5 GTI is lighter, handles better and is nicer to drive especially with DSG.
I dunno about the Mk5 being lighter I thought it was heavier, 1360kg vs 1256kg in a MK4.

A nicely lowered + stiffened MK4 is nicer on the track than a stock Mk5.
You can have more 'fun' without all the traction stability trickery too.

My GTI is about at the end of its stick, unless I throw a lot of $$$ at it there is not too many more KWs to extract.
I don't know how 'drivable' Guys Golf is, if his Polo is anything to go by passengers need Physio every 100km travelled.
    MK4 GTI - Sold
    MK5 Jetta Turbo - Sold
    MK5 Jetta 2.Slow - Until it dies.

The Manual is 1335kg from memory whereas the manual 1.8t mk4 was 1337kg?

There is some info here on the subject of weight. http://www.gtcars.ca/online/volkswag...olf-mkv-2.html

Yes but a lowered and stiffened MK5 is better then a MK4. The stability control and traction control is quite good in the GTI and can be turned off.

Yeah I probably wouldn't want to go to the extent that he has but it shows what can be done for a reasonable amount of money and how much the MK5 can take.

You can extract another 30kw and 50nm of torque out of the mk5 GTI for around $700 and it doesn't affect fuel consumption so it's cheap to mod.

And a Porsche GT3 is better than both of them, even as stock.

          Hey, it was good fun,

Eddy, they had a wee bit of trouble with my car - they had to start the dyno plot 30hp on the negative side of the graph to give it the headroom & then after a can of "belt traction compound" it still wheelspun all the way through
4th! - I can see the benefits of of tying the car down on to the rollers now!

Was a good chance to catch up with ll my aircooled budies - great weather, was a great day.

So the dyno can go over 300 ?

It wont break the dyno, but the dyno plot sheets & plotter can only go to 300hp - they did about 4 calibration runs to see where the plotter would go to on our car, but with the tyre slip, we had no hope of getting full traction, even with 3 people holding it down.

Anyway - it was good to catch up with all the aircooled boys - a lot are still amazed at what a daily driven street golf can do on 98 ron fuel (with absolutely perfect road manners).

I took the two baby seats out of the back to improve HP as well

Here is a video of that twin turbo trike and the fun they had trying to keep that on the dyno (without the wheel blocks!)

HP figures were given as there were a majority of "Old School" people there on the day. The readings were taken in KW then converted to HP.

On this style of Dyno tyre pressures don't make a great difference as compared to say a Dyno dynamics dyno where they actually strap the car down. As you would know one extra click on the rachet strap could cost you a few KW's. Had a mate with a SS ute at a dyno day we went to pushed 228kw atw then the operator demonstrated how and extra click on the tie down straps cam make a difference. Like hows a difference of nearly 9kw sound!!

As for difference between models obviously one is modified and one car stock. Not hard to modify one car to make it better than a later model that is stock. But as has been mentioned current generation has more scope for tuning gains for the smaller outlay of hard earned cash.
