Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

It was the first I've ever been to and it was boring beyond belief. I understand that sometimes it's nice to look at each other's cars, but I would really like to see these awesome cars actually driven like they should be. From what I can gather, you forum blokes are a bunch of pansies who would rather stare at each others cars than see them put through their paces.

How many of you have actually been to the track? Not just for a BBQ Breakfast, where you are warned not to drive faster than road pace, but to an actual track day?

Can we please, please go for a cruise over the local mountains, or the border ranges? Surely there's someone out there that actually enjoys the fact they own a quick car? Twice now I've tried to organise a night at the Willowbank test n tune, but not one person bothered to turn up.

It frustrates me so much to see the effort that has been put into your vehicles, only to see you fuss over tyre pressures, warranties and what type of LED bulb to install.

I'm sure that a large proportion of you will not agree with me, but if any of you feel like going for a drive, an actual drive, please get in touch with me because I'm as keen as a bean.
I;m going to agree with Rhys here.
Happy laps for me is about 90% of what i would push my car to if i was doing a proper track session so i don't see an issue with that sort of event.
Sure in the rain and with the amount of incidents they have had there recently we have been told to keep it at a slower pace but it's still almost double what you could do out on the regular cruises.

The whole point of the mixed meets (laps and hardpark once per month) is to give everyone a good chance to get to know other drivers.
If you get people who are not interested in track sessions and just want to find out about the cars and drivers and get to know people with similar interests it's good to come along.
Plus it gives people a chance to talk to other's about their modifications and even speak to the tuners.

If you want to organise a cruise over Mt Nebo you can do it on here and i am sure you will get a few people attending but on a public road, with a lot of flood/rain damage and frequent police presence i am not overly keen on the idea.
Also, most of the roads are limited to 80km/h so it doesn't give me a rush any more and i don't fancy the speeding fines (same price as a full track day) and the driving gets fairly aggressive.

The big difference is obviously not being a race/competition. I would say I push my car to about 90% of its limits (maybe 75% on the brakes just because I don't want them to completely melt). I think the road speeds which we are told are really just so they aren't liable for any crashes caused by high-speed unless it is wet in that case I don't really go past 140km/h @ Lakeside (<- treat that track with respect). At QR in the dry, I've reached around 175km/h according to car speedo so probably about 165km/h irl. At Lakeside in the dry, I've reached around the 160km/h mark as I'm not too comfortable going too much faster than that at Lakeside. Bear in mind, my car is only a 1.6T with 155bhp (or 100KW per tonne).

If I'm honest, I'm more into perfecting/practicing racing lines and braking points etc rather then drags. I choose not to do proper track days because of money, the fact I only have 1 car and if something happens to that car I'm screwed for uni and work. Because of that, I don't think I'd push too much harder than at 'happy laps'. There are quite a few people that attend the 'happy laps' that also do proper track days.

I'm all for a mountain run like through the back of the GC or near Mt Nebo etc. that'd be great.

Mate you do have some validity but ave to agree with another user that the execution was bad lol. Any mountian cruise ive been to have ended with a nice car making its way to be a coca cola can after going for a flight and not a drive. I think you have to go to the happy laps mate to test your car, i would love to do the same, time has killed me in the past but thats freeing up and will hopefully make one soon. The meets are like just to catch up and talk about your cars, drool a bit, talk a bit of shop and pretty much say hello to those who are thinking your way. If they want to go and talk about bulbs then so what? But like i say i see your point too so dont take it the wrong way, im taking it as constuctive even though im sure plenty wont. Mate ill be one of the first to be at willowbank when i get my Polo ready ( one day!!!) Each to their own suppose. I try to hide when i go to them for fear of question time but still dont mind a catch up from time to time
                Cheers
