Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I've got about 40 minutes of HD footage from this event--lap timer and speedo included. My macbook pro is reporting 8 hours to create the movie! Then upload time after that...sheesh, this'll take a while...

Here is part one of the go pro footage.

I thought the day was good but not as good as the last VWW one. I think I narrowed it down to the fact that there was nearly no one there I knew and it was too overcrowded on the track with very varying driver levels. The red Laguna made it difficult for me because I had to do very late braking to safely overtake it as just about any car is quicker on the straights than I am (125hp/165Nm of nothing!). Still though I lapped it 3 or 4 times, can't remember. Also I overtook one of the Clio RS197/200's too!

I only managed a few clean laps as well, and in Part 2 of the onboard I nearly when off the track where some people did last time on the first left hander. Managed to catch my lift-off oversteer pretty quickly thankfully.

Good stuff, EGG. I especially like the last minute
Honestly though, I like watching your lines and the way you set up corners. Well done!

Haha thanks, yup last minute I kept messing up corner 3 (sharp right hander hairpin), I kept going in too fast and going wide I only went through it correctly a couple of times. Also I learned nearly all my track stuff from video games haha, mainly NFS Porsche Unleased when I was little, LFS, GT4 and GT5 later on. I've always used a steering wheel for playing those games for the past ~10-12 years.

Here is part 2/2. The first 2 and a half minutes are pretty action packed, a good lap in the first ~minute, overtake the rs197 clio @ 1:10, Laguna for something like the 3rd time @ 1:30 and then I almost go off the track because of crazy understeer then lift-off oversteer from going onto corner 4 too fast @ 2:01.

Did you reply to my video one youtube? If that was you - or whoever it is - could you show me how to use the Torque Pro app for track use next time please? I have an OBD2 bluetooth adapter and the app, but I don't know how to record. Thanks.

Your turn-in points are good. All I'd suggest is getting the car in the apex of the corner, closer to the ripple stripe on turns one and two. Your entry to turn 2 appears right, getting the car across the 2 painted lines pre-apex, though just need to get the nose in a bit more and let the car run wider out of the corner. Trusting your peripheral vision for entry, apex, exit will allow you to balance the car on throttle/slide. As you pass the apex on turn 2, be looking at your braking marker for turn 3 as you give it as much throttle as the car can handle.

Turn 3 is a tricky little corner given that it drops 3-4 foot and is dirty, so there's very little grip. It really is a corner that must be taken slowly to be fast, otherwise you'll understeer as you said. Carry some brake into the corner to keep weight on the front.

If the girl friends ford fiesta was a manual I'd bring that out to have some fun with you, but being an auto it would just be cruel, lol.

Mine is auto! (A really crappy ancient 4-spd slushy as well :'( so depressing when the non-turbo DS3 only comes to Australia as an automatic ) But it has manual shifting available at least.

Thank you very much for the advice, would you recommend left foot braking at all? Personally I didn't see the point as it isn't turbo, but I thought it might be good for a quicker exit from the corner as the accelerator is already being depressed. My brakes seem to cope fine at QR, probably down to the fact that I don't reach a very high speed and also the car is fairly light (~1050kg).

Photos and spectator pov videos will be up in the next few days too.

                          No worries.

I found out who it was, I can't watch youtube at work or at uni so wasn't sure intially. But it was the driver of the blue Gordini Clio RS200.

Hehe, thanks mate. Cleanliness is next to godliness.
To be fair, I don't think the others were pushing as hard as I was. After all, it's not a race. It was my second time at QR (2nd time on any track, actually) and I felt like I had something to prove!

I can't count how many times I've watched the lap beginning at 19:30. It's funny, flattering and endearing hearing someone talk about you and your car in a positive way.
