I'm sure i read somewhere that you didn't abuse your car I've got at least another 5k on my tyres. Very happy considering the amount of track time I've had. I think I've only missed one or perhaps 2 of ours, plus done a few sprints.

Matt, the KU31's are a street tyre whereas the KU36's are more performance oriented being considered a semi-slick. KU36's would likely be softer (i'm sure they are), they are a more aggressive tread pattern and more expensive. I got mine (16") for $100 a corner, fitted. For that price I'd consider them again, but a track tyre they are not
Track Car: 06 Polo GTI Red Devil mkII
    Daily: 2010 VW Jetta Highline
Gone but not forgotten: 08 Polo GTI

The KU31's are a harder compound, making me think they would last longer, and I have tried to find KU31's at a decent price (225/(35/40)/18 ) but everywhere seems to be more expensive, around the $250 per coner mark, where as I can get ku36's for around $200 a corner at places like Option 1

EDIT: 225/40/18 KU31 $175each, but if the wear on KU31's are that bad, its worth paying the ~$15 extra for ku36's

Hahahaha! Low blow! There's a big difference between use and abuse. The tyres have been used. The car is being used. And loved.

        • I don't think the wear on them is bad at all, Clay and I are regularly tracking our cars. After sprints, I usually have significant rubber build up on the tyre, I've also worn out the sidewalls, with some chunks taken out - but that's from over heating the tyre.

I usually get 20-30k out of tyres, but have almost always tracked my cars throughout that lifespan. Also must bear in mind that the heat cycles the tyres go through from tracking them would change the properties of the rubber and affect longevity and grip.

          • The Ku31's are a good all around tyre, fits in the sporty grip but fairly long lasting group.
If i didn't take the car out to lakeside for happy laps i am sure i would get another 10-15k out of the set.

I am definitely lining up another set for my next ones.

              • Thanks all for the photos and videos, had a great day!! although half an hour goes like half a second, we should organize a full track day!! I felt more confident in the R32 with the ESP off and using the paddles (unlike at QR with the sport mode and ESP on). I'll go a bit harder next time

interesting lines you got there. What software? On the last event I had one lap show funny on my timer as it lost a gps signal from that overpass/bridge thing, but that doesn't look the case with yours. It's obviously a gremlin in the overlay. Perhaps try doing a few laps around the block to see if it can be calibrated. Can you pull the raw data into MS Excel? That should give you all the plots too, so can compare the recording vs the overlay.

Just did a basic search and found a list of phone apps. Smartphone apps for trackdays

And this is an interesting read: http://www.evoxforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53737

I looked at CMS lap timer, but got mixed reviews. Here's one comparing against Harry's.

                        • Just downloaded CMS for 99c - CMS Lap Timer - Data Acquisition - HD Video Recorder for iPhone / iPad / iPod Touch / Mac

Now to wait 6 weeks to validate it at speed. In the meantime will find an empty road/car park for low speed testing. I'll add the details to my gtech thread in the general discussion section once I've done that. Or if anyone is keen we can arrange a time and find a safe spot to compare CMS, gtech and Harry's.
