Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

        • Had a great time again ! Cheers Clay... But it seems our time on the track was cut short ; couple of pieces of dangerousness I can see in the video there... All I have to say is that if theres cars tailing close to you in the corners LET THEM PASS on the straight ! I felt held up most of the time as we all seem to have a same speed down the straight ~ back off down the straight & let those who are faster through the corners go past you - reminds me of slow drivers blocking the right lanes on highways ><

          • Okay so it seems like there was quiote afew things that need to be rectified for next time.
I had a chat with the guy who runs it from QR's end and he said that it was getting pretty sketchey out there.
He specifically noted a few cars of whom i will be sending a pm to.

First of all, as was said at the safety briefing, IT IS HAPPY LAPS!
It is not timed/track racing/for points etc.
We drive close to the safe limits of our car unless we are told to go slower (as we were this time)
I think the most i got to was about 130/135 when overtaking.
Anyone going over that was blatantly braking the rules considering how damp it was.

Secondly, whilst the usual rules apply that if someone is up your back end constantly on the curves you let them past on the main straight, this event was different.
So taking dangerous lines just because people wanted to prove they could go faster (no real proof) was being stupid and dangerous.

Thirdly, there is no insurance out there for us and a number of people took their family out with them as per usual arrangements.
In the wet everyone should be driving safer than the dry but we had a few people who were going all out as if it were dry and endangering the others/families ot there on the day.

            Finally, it's not a race.
We were told this and everyone heard it.
About 90% of the cars were well within the safe limits but we ended up with a few doing silly things.
Most of us were happy to pull over and let people go past and i know as Rhys has said previously that more than half the track time i had was free of any traffic because i was willing to wait the traffic out on the main straight for one lap every 3.
Overtaking was allowed on the straights which meant you were able to but only if the car being overtaken signals you to go and you go safely.

The 3 people who were spotted by QR will get a warning from me via pm.
This is their last chance, if it happens again i will not be putting you on the happy laps list ever again.

I organise these events so that we can all go out and have some fun in our cars, push them a bit harder than the road but also in a SAFE way.
If you want to do 180km/h on the track and upgrade every go fast bit on your car and want to show people how fast it goes now i don't think this is the event for you.
I would reccomend the sprint sessions or the morning session after ours that goes for 3 hours and costs around $100.

Bear in mind that i am the sole contact for these events at Lakeside raceway so i am not going to have anyone ruin it for the rest of us and possibly have insurance/legal implications at these events in the future.

              +1 Clay.

The videos show overly aggressive driving for 'happy laps'. At a previous event they mentioned spacing between cars as well which i thought would be even more relevant for this event. This is definately not a sprint session!

We were all informed to treat the track as a day out driving with your mates. This means checking your mirrors and driving to the conditions and traffic. If you do this kind of driving on our roads, damn, i'd report you to the cops just so i could feel safe. Watching those videos makes me ever so glad i stayed away from the trouble pack.

                • I was out for a paddle Sun morning on Kurwongbah, heard the noise ( of the Lotus's ) halfway across the lake, so paddled over for a look. Totally forgot this was on. Was watching from the bottom straight on the lake and thought to myself how serious this looked, crowded around the bottom RH off the straight at times, then I realised I was looking at a heap of VW's! The "red mist" had definately descended on quite a few people!! As much fun as it looked, I was glad I was on the water!

wow 2 incidents within 20 seconds......

i must say the pass on the last corner is not excusable but the black R is just too fast down the straight for the white GTI to pass. however the chopping is also dangerous. it looks like the video car was in the blind spot of the black R but we must look at the mirrors more often, even on the straight.

Another +1 from me as well.

The way I see it is that if there is a fast car following you throughout the back of the track, LET THEM PASS. If you are the person wanting to overtake and the car you are wanting to overtake won't let you, then have a cool-down lap or don't go as fast on the straight so that way you can then push in the next few laps, without getting stuck behind another car. Not only will your mental state be much better, but your car will be thankful as well.

I got caught in a big pack towards the end of the straight a few times, so I just held back once I got on the straight again and let them all past.

                      • Clay, many thanks again for organising and sorry to hear that we caused you some unnecessary headaches. Thanks also to everyone who did an anti-rain dance the night before!
My mate in the M3 (it was his first track outing on 4 wheels) is still raving on about how good it was, and I had a blast too. I was pretty damn excited to see another 3 door manual R - I thought I was the only person in Australia with one!! I was less excited to see it with custom exhaust and tune and a mile more pace down the straight though

I saw my oil temp hit 105 for whomever it was that was curious. I think I saw 108 last time when it was hotter. After a half lap back to the pits it was already back down to sub-hundred, so I don't think i'll be borrowing a turbo timer off someone in the Skyline club anytime soon.

I thought to turn ESC off half way through too and that made quite a big difference exiting turn one and also up through hungry. And they say computers know best....

See some of you at QR - can't wait!

Mine maxed out at 108 but immediatly went down to 105 and then sub 100 once we pulled off the track.
