  • SA Volksfest 2010 - 28/11/10 Todd St, Port Adelaide

“It’s that time of year again - the Volks Enthusiasts Club of SA presents a Volkswagen Festival for all. Sunday Nov 28th Volkswagen Street Party ‘Show & Shine’ at Todd St, Port Adelaide and best of all its FREE to come and have a look. Over a hundred Volkswagens of all types will be on display, 20 Throphy categories, live band ‘BlackCat Bone’, Trader stands, food and drink stalls. Entries from 9am to 11am and show closes 4pm. All competitor entries $15. The festival is the Club’s largest and most important event and each year attracts large crowds and plenty of public and media attention.

Background - The Volks Enthusiasts Club of South Australia was formed in August 1996, is non-profit and grew out of a desire to provide VW enthusiasts with an opportunity to meet regularly to build and promote the VW scene. The club's membership of over 125 members includes many people with long years of VW knowledge. We cater for revival and restoration of any VW powered vehicle - either standard or modified. Some of the members cars include: early beetles and Kombi’s, kit cars, Drag cars, street beetles running big motors up to 2330cc's, various type II's, Type III's and water cooled cars. We are also encouraging owners of any Historic Competition VW's to display their vehicles and thereby build interest in a precious bygone era and, more importantly, to ensure the restoration of original cars. A Club magazine called "Volks Enthusiasm" is also available to members. We work with other VW clubs to promote the VW manqué. We regularly hold a variety of events, including: VW Convoys, Shows, Information Schools, Swap Meets, Interstate trips and various VW style social events.”

This going to be another, 'drive up the street, stop and that's where your car stays for the day' kinda show?

That is the format the Volks Enthusiast Club has chosen to go with, also insurance plays apart is these decisions to.

todd street is not the right place to do it. there's an empty parking lot just opposite that would be a better place. to narrow and no structure

Owned by a private consortium who do not wish for their land to be used for cars shows, that said they do allow us o use a small bit of the land (where the building is) for the trade stalls.

Ive said this on another forum
The problem with this show is it is not kid friendly, nothing for them to do and as you park in the street, you have to stay till its finished, its a long time from 9-5 for kids to get bored, or the missus.
No where to put a shade up and have a sit down with friends, you have to go to the pub so you are not near your car, also there is not enough room between cars, so you **** yourself when you see people pushing prams ect.
The premier show in SA is now the other one that is held on an oval across from the plaza at TTG, You also get passing traffic as its on a main road, if you are not in the scene you wouldnt know the one in Port Adelaide was on??
            Just my opinions

i agree, the one at ttg last year was probably one of the biggest i've been to. the mayor of port is a member of the volksenthusiasts or at least has a lot of sway. just not a good venue. i'm sure with enough notice they could find somewhere else.

Gary johanson is the Mayor of Port Adelaide and a decent bloke, he is a member of the club.
The reason they have it at Port Adelaide is they get paid to have it there!

VOLKS ENTHUSIASTS CLUB OF SOUTH AUSTRALIA

                          MEDIA RELEASE – Wednesday, November 23rd, 2010

BEETLES INVADE PORT ADELAIDE THIS SUNDAY

Todd Street at Port Adelaide will be crammed with beetles and just about every other kind of Volkswagen next Sunday when the Volks Enthusiasts Club of SA stages Volksfest 2010.

This will be the third year at the Port Adelaide location and the 11th year of the Volksfest. The event actually runs over three days opening with a cruise on Friday and a dinner on Saturday night.

Country and interstate interest is usually high and there’s always something of interest for anyone with a Volkswagen in their history – and that’s most people.

Volks Enthusiasts President Rob Brown says Volksfest is family friendly. “I think the earliest car there will be nearly 60 years old with the most recent being almost current.”

“Some of our people date back further than the cars but there’s a resurgence of interest from young drivers as well.” Brown said. “Todd Street is a fantastic location and with catering from the VEC team, a great band, two hotels “on site” and some very interesting owners and their cars, it’s a day not to be missed.”

The Volksfest weekend is the biggest event on the club’s calendar, closing off a busy year which included the Ratex Rally in August for the first time. Organized as a charity fundraiser the rally took a gaggle of Volkswagens through the South Australian outback, safely and successfully.

Rob Brown closed by saying the club was fortunate to have a supportive and enthusiastic council behind it. “Volksfest has become an integral part of the Port Adelaide Enfield events calendar and we commend them for their vision.

Volksfest gets underway at 9 am on Sunday, November 28th. Anyone with a VW wishing to take part should enter via Jubilee Street at the eastern end of St Vincent Street. Entry is $15 and judging is optional. Otherwise there is plenty of parking nearby for those who don’;t wish to stay all day.
