Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I'm going to try to head down for a look-see. I don't think there's a point in racing though, I'd be a huge embarassment lol. How much does it cost to do the drags, can you just rock up, pay and face scrutineering?

I know that it's $10 entrance for the day, don't know if you have to pre-pay tickets though (hope not).

just like to point out a few things because i think the water pumper community gets a bit confused with this event you have to pre book to race and its not about having a fast car it is a Volkswagen event not top fuel drag meet people are racing there kombi campers and 36hp beetles and they have a ball doing it if you enter in the drags you be only racing other water cooled cars and last year there where 10 cars think 7 where 100% stock and its a dial your own time format you can be the slowest car there and still win and go home with a trophy pretty simple only reason im not racing is i don't have a vw on the road

            Hi Girls & Guys,

The first post has been updated (although for some reason I can't update the banner - can the mods lend a hand?).

Unfortunately, for the watercooled class, things are not looking as good as they did in 2008, with only two cars so far entered. Last year the drivers and crew in this class had a great time, and although aircooled cars still dominate the numbers, the VeeDub community at this event is all about fun regardless if you compete with a Golf, Trike, Beetle or Buggy.

This is bracket racing dial your own, and last year's winners can testify that a stock Mk1 still stands a chance of winning against a 2009 Gti.

            See you on the track.

            Cheers
            Craig

I guess that will be just me and Courtney . Ive mentioned this countless times before and it falls on deaf ears . Our watercooled scene is getting smaller , it seems people no longer support VW events unless they have something to benefit from it . Not a single Queenslander has entered the watercooled section , like are all your cars out of action ? Too busy chasing cane toads ? like do any of you support a VW event ???
2 watercooled cars entered , thats just pathetic

Not into drag racing, have a budget to do Buller sprint, targa wrest point and targa tas and thats it. As I said in an earlier post I think you would find more would take part if they included the Morgan Park circuit with a sprint event as more up here are into circuit racing than drag racing. Slagging people off isn't a great way to go about attracting people to the event either

This is what I mean by people doing things for themselves instead of for the local scene . Im willing to not do a series in sports compact in order to save my budget for supporting VW events . I guess thats just me . Next you'll find there will be no VW shows and we all need to start going to auto salon or something . Club VW hosted a track day here , at a loss . I know the drags is more profitable and your going to get more cars turn up . As for slagging people off , I really dont think anyone is gonna turn up to this event from Queensland . Its just a real dissapointment when you spend so much time and money and no one really cares , yet the air cooled guys are full of enthuisiasm and cant wait to go . Maybe its just me with my air cooled roots , or maybe the watercooled scene just doesnt care .

I'd like to go and give racing a try but I'm just starting an unpaid internship that leaves me time and money poor and juggling uni at the same time can get pretty hectic. I'll still be doing my best to attend, though not in a racing capacity.

If I come down I'll say G'day Seb, prove that we're not all bad

I can sympathise with the frustration here. The VW flag doesn't seem to fly for track events. I was the sole VW at QR sprints last weekend, it's rare that there's any VWs at any trackdays, get the odd R32.

I can't make it out to warwick and you will all have a blast no doubt.

I too would prefer a track event and had organised them, skid pans and driver training for my old sooby forum but they fall of deaf ears.

Well Im pulling the S3 out this year , no point taking 2 cars to race against each other . I will be taking the VR6 . The motor is being run in and should be bedded in by the time it gets to Queensland . There is also a T3 van entered so at least Courtney will get some practice launching a highly strung N/A VR6 at the drags .

10 years ago there were about 20 watercooled cars entered at the drags at Oran Park . This year only 2 will be at Warwick . I dont understand why with so many more cars out there that so few people come . I represent the only tuner who has any real interest in drag racing and who regularily does events . With so few cars entered this year it completely jeapordises the plans for the following year . I'd like to still go , and race , but Id rather be racing against the same cars . I think most of you fail to understand that this will trickle down to all aspects of our scene . VW Australia sponsers the event , and if they see no watercooled cars at the event they wont even think about a budget for a motorsport team . Why do you think the race team was axxed ? It was due to the lack of support from the general public . If this kind of attitude keeps up then there will never be a VW race team again . There will never be any support for Privateers like Kosi who stuck his neck out and raced a MK5 gti on a tiny budget with very few sponsers . This is where the scene is headed . The aircooled guys will always be better than us , faster cars , more sponsership , more people coming to events and more respect in general . Why , cause they turn up to events and they have the inspiration . It doesnt matter how fast their cars are ,they turn up and give it a go .

My question is , the sponsers of this forum , why havent you made an effort to go ?
And the tuners , why is a tuner shootout in a magazine more important than supporting the local VW scene ?

                              rant over

I think the point is that each of us support the scene in the ways that appeal to us and I don't see anything wrong with that or any reason for having a go at people about it.

Some support the scene by going to air-cooled / water-cooled events that have drags, some guys do show and shines, some like club circuit days or sanctioned circuit racing some guys like drive days and social get together's and I and a couple of others I know get VW out there in the tarmac & gravel rally side of the scene.

There is no one right or wrong way to show your support to the badge or community and each of us has a limited amount of time and cash to support the scene and so we do it in ways that appeal to ourselves.

Having a go at people because they aren't attending a particular event is a sure fire way to drive them away from attending not to attract them. As the old saying goes You'll catch more bees with honey than with vinegar...

                                Cheers Al
