Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD VW Warwick 2009

    Hi Everyone,

A reminder that entries close this Friday September 25th, and due to the number of entrants for 2009, no late entries or entries on the day will be accepted. 68 cars and drivers have already entered, with a record 6 women drivers so far across two classes of racing - aircooled VW and VW Bodied Other Engine. Well done girls.

Due to the large number of people also attending both the Saturday night dinner and Sunday morning breakfast, you must book a seat with your entry form by the 25th September. Last year I did take some last minute bookings on the Saturday, but not this year, sorry.

Thanks to Dave Butler for helping me with my final preparations of the VWMA drag rat. A day spent tuning the suspension and setting the alignment unearthed a bent tie rod, so the car should track a little better than last time.

Wayne Penrose has also graciously stepped in with some very unique VW prizes for weekend raffles. Visit the VWMA stand to check out what's on offer. Thanks Wayne. The VWMA trade stand is adjacent to the control tower.

Apart from the trackside fence line where reserved pit marquees will be erected, all other areas are first in best dressed, but there is plenty of room to find a spot.

    See you on the track.

    Cheers
    Craig

I'm sure you would get more participants from QLD Watercooled members if you also utilised the full Morgan Park track for laps rather than just the 1/8th mile strip, not many of us into drag racing up here.

      Hi Al,

No, impossible to manage on the same weekend. Myself and my team have little time to make a cup of coffee over the two day drag meet, let alone move between circuit and drags.

However, if you think there is enough interest amongst the watercooled guys to do a sprint/circuit event in Qld, here's a basic guideline to run with if someone on here is keen to organise one:

      1. First, you will need a guaranteed minimum 70 racers @ $150 each to cover circuit hire, insurance, ambulance, fire and CAMS/AASA officials. You will also need a minimum of 20 non-race volunteers to handle scrutineering, flag points and marshaling. This is of course also agreeing to let the track owners take the gate and any other spectator fees, catering, etc.

80 competitors will help cover the cost of tickets, advertising, stationary, postage, phone, etc, and anything above this will mean a small return to the guys and gals who organised the whole thing. The recent sprint event at Wakefield ran at a loss with 54 entrants @ $150 each, and this did not include the cost of advertising, tickets, etc

      2. An individual, business, or incorporated club will need to take responsibility for the event and insurance; ie someone will need to sign as guarantor for some aspects of the event. If it is a CAMS track you will also need affiliation.

      3. Allow 5-6 months prior to the event to organise the weekend. Ideally, the job would suit someone self-employed or a person willing to sacrifice a family/social life to stitch it all together.

These above points are the basic considerations before even thinking about starting an event such as this, and they are the same ones I have to deal with for ANDRA drag events. Last year, Warwick had 74 entries, so I at least covered the track and hire costs in the events 3rd year.

There's a reasonable amount of effort invloved, but if you like a challenge, there's nothing stopping anyone from organising a circuit meet.

      Cheers
      Craig

We attended warwick last year and i had a great time (altho being heavily pregnant and being attacked by bugs, the live kind!)
It was great to see a fair few females out on the track, hopefully i'll be one of them this year
It would be great to see somemore sydneysiders there this year, i know the trip is long but its worth it!!
Word of warning if you do want to attend be sure to arrange accomodation as early as possible!
