Had the opportunity to drop in on the show on Sunday and while the number of cars were impressive, I was disappointed with the Mark V roll-out. My count was 1 R32, 1 GTi & 1 TDi. Now I know mine was not up to detail standards so I parked elsewhere and only had a short time to look, but I thought Adelaide had sufficient Mark V owners that perhaps a dozen may have shown up. Also I did not see a current version Polo GTi.
Also what an opportunity missed by Solitaire and other dealers that they did not have a Mark VI on show down there.
Maybe by next year I might have to learn to detail and get the scratches on my rims fixed up to make the GTi presentable. Might even talk my son into bringing his Polo GTi along.

I find it curious that someone who did not enter their Golf V should complain that there were not enough Mk V there. If any watercooled owner is not interested in trophy winning, all they have to do is give their VW a good clean (as against detail) and put it on display. $15 all day parking would have to be the cheapest in Glenelg.
I began advertising this event on the 9th Jan, adequate time for VW owners to have a VW ready in a presentable condition. If you have scratches on a rim, I can put you in touch with a person who did one of ours.
As for Solitaire, if you work there 6 days a week, are you keen to put in a seventh (unpaid) at a car show where all the tyre kickers will flock. We (VWCSA) stopped chasing Solitaire as we found it too difficult to get the payment for their Advert ($50) in the Magazine we produce on the day. One year we couldn't get it at all despite numerous invoices from our Treasurer. On year it took almost 12 months. It was just not worth the effort.
I make no apologies for the rant, because you hit me where it hurts. The VWCSA incures a great debt to run this show each year. It costs $365 + $300 Bond for the hire of Wigley Reserve. Each 1st Trophy costs $46.67 (2nd place also given for numerous classes) and there are approx 30 classes. We do not attract a very high level of sponsorship ($50 for an Advert in the mag, $50 for trophy sponsorship, $50 for a trade site - not over the top). Perhaps some of the Bussinesses still reap the benifits of the show without the financial input.
I intend to see Bill Holst (Dealer Principal) at Solitaire to see if they would be interested in sponsoring a watercooled car of the show. I don't know what else to do to get more watercooled VWs out, but not coming out and complaining it not one way.

Maris
I agree with Maris here. I will come out firstly and admit that i did not enter my car as I had previous plans that day I could not get out of but at the same time I have no complaints about how many or how little number of cars there were.
Keep in mind GTi Crow that a large number of MKV owners you see out there around Adelaide are probably not even aware of VWwatercooled or any car club and may not be into that kind of thing either.
Maris, I know exactly where you are coming from as I have had similar experiences with a previous car club I was apart of. It's frustrating when no one is willing to help out but everyone is willing to complain. Keep up the good work though.

For what it's worth there were 2 R32's but I left early.

That is the biggest contradiction I've ever read <Clarkson> IN THE WORLD!! <Clarkson>
Looks like I hit a raw nerve. For that I apologise as it was not intended. I like others had family commitments that prevented my involvement, meaning I could spend no more than a quick walk around. As I indicated I was impressed with the whole show - and appeciate the effort the organisers took in getting it up and running. Certainly many hours had been spent by people to present their cars as they did on Sunday.
I do not have those hours spare and unfortunately after having been driven off the road into guttering (by a little old lady in an old bomb who suddenly decided to change lanes) my rims are badly scared. They will be repaired but not in the immediate future. I also did not have the time nearing the event to prepare my car no matter how much notice had been given. These were choices I made and I went for the short time I could in the hope to see the result of others who had made the effort. The number surprised me - that is all.
I raised the dealer issue because in these times and the additional competition around I thought salespeople would go that extra mile in the hope of a sale (good ones use to, in most cases supported by their company) - I was unaware of the efforts the organisers had already gone to in the past with this.
As I said maybe next year - time will tell. Might even have a GTi Mk6 as well by then - if they ever release Aussie details and costing.

I have already contacted Bill Holst and put forward the proposal of providing a trophy for Watercooled VW of the Show.
Your incident with the rims & curb are similar to my wife's in the Golf, we had it repaired on recommondation from the Holden Commodore Club. He did a great job, it is unnoticable. Let me know if you want his contact details.
I truly look forward to your involvement next year.
So back to the day for a sec . . . i had a ball, met some new faces and made some good contacts too. I thought the golf turnout was pretty good with a nice selection of sweet clean rides. It still blows me away how sexy the R32's are Oh baby. Love the rims Lorenz, and as for the Mk1's it was very cool to have a GTI there but Greasy's beautiful stockie was totaly the pic of the bunch for me. All in all a great day, and OMG some of you were talking about how much time you spent cleaning your rides, after the mess i made of mine up at the dirt motorkhana a couple of weeks back i must have spent 20 hours atleast getting it all sorted and lookin mean
Big thanks to all who came and especially all involved in organising and bringing this event together, very nice work. If all goes well i should have something very special for next year

Thank you!!
Did you have a golf there? Sorry for not already knowing
And I should also express my thanks to the organisers and all who came, even if it was just for a little bit.
I kind of agree that given how many MK5s there are on the road you might have expected more at the show. I guess the average modern VW owner/driver is a different breed from those of old and the VW badge and heritage doesn't mean as much (or anything).
