  • WA [WA] Dovw 2008

    Hi everyone,

This year's Perth Day of the Volkswagen is scheduled for Sunday 30th November at G.O. Edwards Reserve in Vic Park (same place as last year). Thought we could get the ball rolling....

More importantly, the VW Club of WA (who organise this event) recently had their AGM and have now called a Special General Meeting for 7pm, Wed 1st Oct at John Hughes.

It seems the meeting has been called to 'determine a new direction' for the club which makes it sound like they may be having problems. Although I'm not a member, I've been asked if I can post this up to get as many people to the meeting as possible.

Their problem is they don't get any new members, and there are less aircoolers on the road every year. If there were regular track days and CAMS events, I might actually think about joining the club.

I think (hope) that's the sort of direction they are looking at. It's a very old club and probably needs a complete overhaul to keep it going and attract new members.

Maybe we could all go, and drool over new Rs in the show room at the same time!

i got a letter from them the other day about that meeting. It'd be good if they start organising things for watercoolers as well, like runamuk said, track days and CAMS events. i don't think that most members are interested in something like that, most of them drive Kombis and bettles. not the best cars for a track day.
If anyone else is going to the meeting im going too. i'd love to take an R50 for a drive, if they have one (which i highly doubt)

Paid membership is always the big issue for clubs. When you get to a proper paid up member base you need to worry about iabilities and insurances for events etc etc. It can become a bit of a nightmare to manage not to mention expensive.

I would encourage everyone who is part of the scene to join and support your local club since they are the ones that put on the big events, the air cooled side slowly rusting into oblivion someone has to pick up where they have left off.

As for track days and things more organised than a fish and chip run, these things can cost major $$. For example Wakefield Park, which is one of the cheaper venues, can be over $150 or more per head for a dedicated track day, and thats IF you get the numbers to warrant it. Yes you might be able to organise a day like that once every year for the average drivers who want a bash in their car, but more often and the numbers quickly drop.

The Admittedly it was a week day, but when I organised a run at Wakefield here, even with a couple of month warning, I got two other cars...

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Just make sure you park your car with the rest of the watercoolers, not like last year under a tree

Its not easy running an active CAMS affiliated club. I'm now on the committee for the WRX owners club of WA and the amount of work required to run a succesful track event at Barbagallo or Collie is significant. AHG is easier as you dont have the CAMS, marshal and scrutineering requirements.

If you want the VW club to run track days etc I suggest you'll have to join the club and put your own hand up to start organising stuff. Otherwise the WRX club have a number of VW (and Porsche) owners who attend events. I'll be doing a few more track/training events in the GTI as I'd rather be doing timed events in the STI.

I am happy to help out with organising things, I'll be going to this meeting, and may think about joining very soon.

I'm still a member but not sure I'll be able to make the meeting. Don't think I have enough time to help with 2 clubs though!

I'll definately be going to the meeting as well. The only reason I hadn't joined up before was the apparent lack of interest and the heavy weighting towards aircoolers. Thanks for the responses guys, I'll pass on that we're all interested.
