Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Hope you guys realise this is originally a left hand drive import from the US by the look of it. It doesn't mention it in the advert but from the wipers it is dead giveaway of a conversion and who knows how well it was done so buyer beware, check it out carefully and check for the import papers as it isn't rego'd and may not be able to if the papers are not legit, could be an expensive trap or a real bargain, check for yourselves though.77 Golf tarmac rally

wipers look fine to me..? ie, pointing the right way...?
Although if you look in the rain tray, it has bonnet hinge latch thingys. IIRC, I'm not 100% sure what they're called, but US cars had different bonnet hinges which incorporated a hinge/latch that would catch on the thing in the rain tray and in a front end collision prevent the bonnet from bending up and smacking the driver in the face. Euro cars may have had them too? But I've never seen them on an aussie cara

Definately american mate from the square headlight front end, lack of rear child seat restraint hook, american plate mount on the front and bonnet catch hooks but you just can't see the steering column properly to be 100%. It DOES however look pretty clean but there could be a heap close up under the nice new paint. I would at least spend the time to inspect her.77 Golf tarmac rally

The lights are not "American" as American squares go around on to the front quarter panels, the grill and light set up is Rieger, 90s style. Unless they went through the pain of welding in a new front end, replacing the quater panels and replacing the rear end to suit euro tail lights, i don't think its American. It also doesn't need child restraints for the same reason it doesn't need a cat converter, its a '77.
The kit just looks like a bbs or zender regardless what the owner says.
The number plate mount doesn't mean **** as its not a feature that comes with the car. Wipers are in the normal position. Dash looks like a normal GLS dash. The only thing that looks different is the bonnet hooks.MK1 GLS 3door

SIGH...................................... have a gander through the Australian design regs All cars from about the mid 70's on were required to have a rear child seat restraint point in the cars (usually bolt with a metal tongue attached). The golfs was in the rear roof panel and was fitted to australian bound cars! The rear lights on the RAbbit were small until 1981 (79-81 models). I think the Rabbit GTi had the large lights early on but don't quote me on that. The Early rabbits were not all fitted with wrap around indicators either Spyda they are the late style westy's. Some had internal square units with the indicators in the front bumper.
All these are US spec rabbits
Early front lights
Early tail lights
Another interesting feature not present on a great deal of aussie cars is the addition of the fog light switch in the dash above the radio, may not be standard but still this car certainly is interesting with the reiger GTO grill to boot. Generating lots of talk anyway, hope he flogs it.
If you buy the car i hope it proves to be a great reliable car with many years trouble freeLast edited by Volksee77; 07-12-2010, 10:21 PM.77 Golf tarmac rally

erm, i agree with the others, I really don't think its an American import. It's not an American front end, it's completely different, look at it compared the pictures you posted. No US Rabbits had a dual square lamp setup.
Its part of the bodykit. If anything it looks a bit like a jetta front end....
The wipers on all German built Golfs were LHD up until 1987, even my '84 MK2 has LHD wipers.Last edited by walshydub; 07-12-2010, 08:26 PM.

For what it's worth and not wanting to add fuel to the fire
- My 77 has wipers on the same side
- My 77 does not have child restraint anchors
- That car has a carby air cleaner bracket, US 77 spec cars were CIS if memory serves.
- I've seen those bonnet hooks on other cars here before.
