The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Vehicles Modified Golf GTi on Gumtree

Hi, I found the following car on Gumtree and it's piqued my interest.

I usually like to buy stock, but this seems pretty good value.

Anyone have an opinion on the mods the seller has installed? How would they affect driveability/reliability etc? Obviously I would test drive it before buying, but any feedback would be useful.

    Thanks

Dropped $2k probably because the clutch needs replacing.

Other than that there’s some nice mods on the car.

That lowered price is okay, but nothing amazing. There are tonnes of MK6 GTIs for sale, both stock and modded. I've seen some as low as $12k albeit with high kms.

The mods seem pretty standard for most people that go down the mod path for MK6's, so should be quite reliable. However, a MK6 is very similar to a MK5 in terms of feel on the road, but the fit and finish is definitely better - I had a MK6 GTI and now a MK5 GTI. If you can afford to, try and go for a MK7. For the original price of that car, you'd be at the cusp of an early MK7 GTI.

        Thanks tig.

Why would the clutch need replacing? Par for the course at that ks? Or clutch not built to handle the mods?

          Thanks whichy.

          I'd love a mk7, but I don't think the budget will stretch.

On carsales mk7s seem to start at about 27k. I don't want to spend more than 20k. Even allowing for some negotiation, I think I'm priced out.

I want manual and ideally leather, so the buying pool is really small. I know you can get cheap mk6s, but I'd want a late (2012), not too high ks.

I used to own a mk5, so happy with a fit and finish upgrade in a mk6.

What's the main diff between a mk6 and mk7. LSD, XDS and driving modes? All round better chassis?

Interesting answer to your question here - MK6 -v- MK7 : Golf GTI

If you only have $20k to spend, then try to snap up an Edition 35 Mk6 GTI as they have the S3/Golf R engine. With only a remap they will make more power than that GTI you linked to. They are DSG only though I believe..

The stock clutch is the weak point with a lot of manual tuned cars. Especially with a DP/stage 2 tune the torque will be quite a bit higher which tends to shorten the clutch life. Just budget in a heavy duty clutch.

Thanks whichy. Nice tip on the E35. I think they were sold in manual, but very rare.

I was going to start my own Mk6 vs Mk7 thread, but assumed one had been done somewhere. That one's an insane effort by WhiteJames.

I think by the time I finish reading it, I might have saved up enough money for a new Mk8
