Good luck with your search. There are a few on Gumtree and if the wife would let me I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.

They make great daily drivers, especially with a few mods and the occasional tinkering.

cheers mate, i'm on every site literally every day searching- its getting ridiculous!

i've heard the mk2 engine is one of the simplest to learn/ modify and am keen to get stuck into it!

5-6K is a bit odd budget for Mk2
There are 2 over 10K on the market, one 16V and one 1.8T
On average an 8V Mk2 won't worth over 5K even a super clean example.
Good luck anyway, and you're right Mk2 is very simple car to work with, not only its engine. This forum people (Sportracer in particular) are very helpful. The other good source is Mk2 UK forum VW Golf Mk2 Owners Club - Index page
        Great people, great Mk2 info.

cheers mate, am currently looking at an 8V that the seller has cleaned up heaps- SUPER CLEAN, 210k kms, says he's replaces all hoses, major service, etc. he's asking for $7.5, sounds like too much to me? do you agree?

            Way, way too much!

A mega clean one recently sold in Sydney for less than $5k and that one on Gumtree in Tassie for $1500 would be my choice. With a budget of $5k you could do a lot with it provided you do the work yourself or have mates who know what they are doing.

Give Matt a call at Camden GTI - 02 4627 3072. He's forgotten more about MK2's than most of us will ever know and can tell you what they are really worth. He might even know of some for sale.

            Cheers

            Paul

I have an 8v white mk2 gti, 140kms, full service history. Aussie delivered. Paint on the bonnet isnt great but other than that its probably good to above average considering most of the cars ive seen up close lately. No rips in the interior, some cracks in the dash but most are cracked these days. Its my daily driver at the moment alongside our mk7 GTI.

Bad part... its Auto but i was chatting to matt at camden GTI and he seemed to think a manual conversion wasnt difficult. I didnt want to do it as i figured the car is more valuable "as delivered" for an enthusiast etc...

Im considering selling as i have 2 and dont really need 2 (see sig). Originally bought this car as a parts car that needed work but it turns out the work needed was less significant than i first thought so i started restoring her. Has a scrape on one side flare but i already have a replacement in better condition.

Its currently registered in SA but my black mk2 just passed a roadworthy in NSW and it is in worse condition than this one! haha

I'm about to put full new suspension in it (brand new KYB shocks and 16v springs) and some new wheels but ive just bought a new house and the savings aren't what they used to be... anyway if youre interested, shoot me an email msjp81@gmail.com and ill flick you some pics. Would be keen to see some of the Kombi. I'd love a dual cab splitty one day but that could be a starting point

Conversion from auto to manual isn't too hard. Matt should have all the parts and I've got everything if you get stuck.

                  Cheers

Depends if you're doing it yourself or paying someone else.

You'll need a 5 speed 020 gearbox, linkages, gearstick, pedal assembly, flywheel, clutch and clutch cable (from pedal to gearbox). Most of the parts can be taken from a MK3 but I don't know about the pedal assembly (brake, clutch and accelerator pedals). You might need a proper MK2 assembly. Matt at Camden GTI will have all the parts and can let you know exactly what you need and how much work is involved.

If Matt hasn't got any of the parts I've got everything including a 2.0 motor and 5 speed box but you'd need to spend a day driving to my place and back to Sydney, Matt is local.

The whole swap could be done in a weekend if you know what you're doing and have a good toolbox + a mate or two to help.

Have a look at my MK2 thread (see signature below - pages 15 and 16) to see what could go wrong with a gearbox swap. At one stage I was ready to shoot the car.

                      Cheers
